Jun 19, 2012 - All of you making Iron Man suits #1

Like so many befor eme, I would like to make an iron man suit, but as a single parent, and with several other things going on, I don't have a lot of time to spend on a daily basis, so I was hoping some of you extremely experienced and talented people could help me out. The biggesr thing is scaling. Obviously I don't have time for trial and error to see if pieces fit so hopefully soneone here has about the same dimensions as I do that and could help me with this. I'm 6'1'', 190-195 lbs.

Im 6'2" about 215lbs.... I had to scale most of my parts up about 5%...... The cob/abs, and feet being the exception. Im a 34" waist and i had to scale it up about 10% from default..... I wear a size 13 shoe and also had to scale them up about 10% also..

I hear that, scaling issues have nearly destroyed my War Machine build over and over again. The lessons I've learned the hard way:
    1. Just because you need to scale up your bicep by 14%, doesn't mean the rest of the suit needs 14 % (yeah, I did that )
    2. Find a reference point/area in the Pep and use the point to point measurement. Unfortunately for circumferences (cod!) I had to carefully click from point to point around the circle, then add them up.
    3. Build in paper first, then again in foam, the extra time is worth it for the cleaner product that fits the first time. I have 2 thighs, 2 cods, a boot, and a shoulder that would all fit an NBA player because of this issue.

It is really frustrating to have to rebuild parts that are too big or too small. My VERY limited experience has taught me more about what I don't know than it has about how to scale stuff. I'm subscribing here in hopes that one of the old pro's tips will help me out too.

    Good luck

If i am completely off I am sure one of the nice more experienced builders here will correct me.

Your lithe like build is too your advantage with the build you more than likely only need to concider the height variable - As a well built 6 footer I am having to work out where to add shims into the armour pieces to accommodate the extra girth of my chest legs and arms.

Good luck with the build and wow - a marathon in a full suit after the swim and cycle that's crazy but awesome.
this is Govenors', it works if the whole suit is scaled to the exact same size, eg 25.411754

so if you find a suit that's all scaled correctly by the same guy, use that method and as long as your not overly obese, which at 195~ your not this works.

I'm going to go ahead and get all my accurate cothing measurments, and maybe that will help.

Pepakura Designer update comes with a tool where you can measure the part. Like what Han Polo mentioned, you'd probably have to scale the parts differently.

Seconding all of what Han Polo said. I've also wasted a lot of time on a War Machine build by not spending the time making sure everything was in scale. I definitely recommend upgrading your version of Pepakura and using the measuring tool.

What I've started to do is figure out the dimensions of a part's basic shape and build a physical prototype out of cardboard or posterboard. Doesn't have to be fancy, just a box that is the same rough size as the piece. Then you can try it on and see if you're way too big or way too small.

Then when you've figured out the scale for each part, print them out and use masking tape to roughly assemble the cardstock pieces. Again just to test fit to make sure the piece you're going to make isn't too large or too small. It's easy to cut out new card pieces, but you'll bury yourself in wasted foam if you wait until then to test fit.

No matter how careful you are, you'll probably wind up making something that's not the right size. Just don't be afraid to spend the time measuring and making mock-ups before you cut into foam. This is also a good time to mention that setting budgets for projects is a good idea. You'll bleed yourself dry if you keep wasting foam on every attempt.
