    Jul 31, 2012 - Adruino LED help #1

Hi i am currently programming an LED based matrix just like volpin for his Daft Punk helmet.. Now i really dont know what to buy next to an adruino uno / 100 soft red LED and cables. I am making them without a board because i need to look through the LED's.

I am googling the hell out of it but really could use the help. Thanks a lot.

I would also be interested in any information concerning this. I'm a complete idiot when it comes to electronics.

I think the problem may be that you are asking such an incredibly broad question - effectively "teach me electronics in a forum post". Fora work better when you ask specific, answerable questions that can be wrapped up in a few paragraphs.

With regard to your actual problem, you need to first establish exactly what you want the device to do, figure out an engineering approach that will allow you to achieve it, and then implement it. I'm not at all clear on what you're trying to achieve, so that would be a start.

In the broadest sense, an Arduino board can, indirectly and with some additional bits and pieces, do a lot of visually spectacular things with a matrix of 100 LEDs. It can't drive 100 LEDs directly, because it doesn't have enough general-purpose input/output pins or enough current-handling capacity to drive all those LEDs to their maximum output simultaneously. There are some fairly straightforward approaches to solving that problem but it depends very much on what you want the thing to do, what sort of things you've done before, what parts you have on hand, your budget, timescale, and other factors which I don't know about.
