Anyone identified the exact white trainers that David Tennant wears as the 10th Doctor ?
Mar 21, 2011, 12:18 PM - Re: 10th Doctor's white trainers
They're chuck tailors, not white but off-white, with the logo's painted over with fabric paint.

These would be what you want. I have yet to find them elsewhere online. But I haven't checked eBay yet.
Mar 21, 2011, 12:53 PM - Re: 10th Doctor's white trainers
Style M9162, off-white. And the logos weren't painted over, that's just one of those persistent bits of misinformation that will never die.
Mar 21, 2011, 1:35 PM - Re: 10th Doctor's white trainers
Chucks are not hard to find. I've seen them at stores in the mall in that color. It's not a burden to purchase them online, anyhow. No matter what, be sure to try any color of high-tops at the store. After you find ones that are comfortable, write that size down or something so you remember. Your regular shoe size will not correlate to the Converse size. I wear a size 12 in every other brand of shoe (other than dress shoes) and in Converse I wear a size 11.

That's on the 10 breakdown MK2.... :-(

Sports direct sell chucks, also eBay. I own several pairs myself, they're all I really wear!
Also try Schuh.

It's a mercy that they're off-white, as they don't take too much maintainance and cleaning.
Mar 21, 2011, 2:09 PM - Re: 10th Doctor's white trainers
Aren't they painted over (physically or digitally) in some promo shots, but generally left alone in the actual series?
Mar 21, 2011, 6:14 PM - Re: 10th Doctor's white trainers
They were ripped off for some promo shots, but in the series they left them on. You can actually see them in the scene in Dave Ward's avatar.
I asked Bob to fix the errors in the breakdown, but it appears he forgot.

On a semi-related note, the maroon ones seem to be getting scarce. I've had a pair for about six years that finally disintegrated last week and finding a replacement pair was a bit of a challenge. They're still available through the Converse site, but a lot of places seem to be clearancing them out (I ended up getting a pair for about $30). Luckily the black and natural white ones are core colors, so they won't be going out of production.

Damn. I'm glad you said something, Punchbuggyblues. I had found them on Amazon for under $40, but now the price has gone up and I might as well just buy them from Converse. Guess I should do that soon then!
Apr 1, 2011, 10:40 PM - Re: 10th Doctor's white trainers
Heh, I just bought my Red trainers today at Shoe Show for $43...and I can't for the life of me locate the off-white/cream colored ones except online...next payday perhaps
Apr 2, 2011, 1:03 AM - Re: 10th Doctor's white trainers
The emblems were removed, not painted over, IIRC. Which isn't hard to do.
Also, be SURE you get the off-white ones. I've got a pair of the white ones, and while I love them to death, they aren't accurate.
Related note: If I ever run for president, I will wear nothing but Converse all the way to the top.
Apr 2, 2011, 1:14 AM - Re: 10th Doctor's white trainers
But as I said, only on the publicity photo pair. The ones seen on screen still had their emblems.
Apr 3, 2011, 8:55 PM - Re: 10th Doctor's white trainers
*grumble* I wish I could find a pair of Cream colored ones in the stores I've been going to...all they have are the "Atomic white" which isn't accurate...And, alas I now have no money to order online...*sighs* FRIDAY!!!
Apr 4, 2011, 1:55 AM - Re: 10th Doctor's white trainers
Eclipse, you need to be looking for plain white. That's the correct color. It's not called cream.
And Risu, I'm wondering if they just photoshopped out the emblems, then, since I know that the white ones were Tennant's own shoes, according to an interview he did. I'm pretty sure the mono black ones had the emblems cut off (rubber, easy to do, did it to mine because I didn't like 'em on there), and the maroon ones had the emblems on.
Also, anyone who already has the atomic white ones, just wear them constantly. They'll quickly get dirty enough that you can never tell the difference between them and the natural white ones.
Apr 4, 2011, 3:38 AM - Re: 10th Doctor's white trainers
Not photoshopped, I own that pair of shoes and they ripped them off.
Apr 4, 2011, 4:25 AM - Re: 10th Doctor's white trainers
I am so jealous of you right now, just for the record. And I'm glad to know; I wasn't ever sure. So I'm guessing that means that there were promo shot shoes, and then Tennant's own white shoes, which he kept, and the emblems were left on those.
Aaand now I'm going to start digging through the episodes again, as most of the promo shots show slightly dirty white shoes, while the shoes from the show itself (usually) looked dirtier but lighter. I'm wondering if the show-used whites were Optical White, as mine have taken on a slightly more natural color after wearing them for a while. Unless someone has several good shots from different episodes to prove this theory wrong.
Apr 4, 2011, 5:16 AM - Re: 10th Doctor's white trainers
The pair I have were Tennant's shoes, which had the emblems removed and were used for all the promo shots. They weren't optic white, but back when they were purchased the natural white was a lot whiter then the cream color they are now. Sometime before 2005, the color of the natural white shoes changed pretty drastically, which is why all the shoes used in the show are the cream color but the promo photo shoes are closer to the optic white, but all the shoes are the M9162's.
Apr 4, 2011, 6:10 AM - Re: 10th Doctor's white trainers
I thought Tennant's shoes were used in the show itself, and the promo shoes were BBC property.
So basically, either way is going to be more or less accurate? Dirty/slightly dyed Optical White for promo style, and White (cream) for show?
Also, found a pic of the inside side of the mono blacks, and it does indeed look like they removed the logos. I'll try and find one that's a decent resolution, but he didn't wear them often.
Apr 4, 2011, 6:25 AM - Re: 10th Doctor's white trainers
I'd be interested in seeing that picture. You mean the ones he wore with the tux?
According to Louise Page, and backed up by my source for the shoes, a pair of boots were picked out for Tennant's Doctor, but he vetoed them with a pair of chucks he wore in, so they used them for the promo photos, and then they were stored and several pairs were purchased for use on the show.
Also, I would say that if you want to go for the promo photo look you can get the optics really dirty and go with it, but the unbleached is still technically the correct model and the cream colored ones were the only ones ever seen on screen.

I've always wanted to find out about that first pair of shoes...wasn't it originally going to be a pair of Japanese jump boots?
