At ILM, there were three panel-scribing methods used. The simplest involved clipping off the very tip of an exacto blade and dragging it upside down. Others used a modified dental pick, while I used this tool.

Large areas, that dont run into adjacent objects (youll see what i mean if you use one Takevin) i use a Tamiya/Olfa cutter/scribe tool, its kinda like a hooked blade, that instead of "scratching" a line into the media, it removes a fine line of it, very neat too.
There are so many tools for this job, Hasegawa Tritool do a killer line...but you may find buying a few various options, for various areas and shapes?

That's what I've done, when I haven't cheated and just drawn them on with a pencil!

Don and PHA have covered all of mine...! I tend to use vinyl tape or other bits of styrene (some cut to shape, very thin stuff) as guides.

Depends a bit on scale, which method I'll use.

I watched a how-to which uses a surface gauge to mark horizontal lines in renshape. The pattern is fixed to a work surface, and the surface gauge is drawn from side to side.

I am sure one could be fashioned large enough for a SS deathstar..
