    Aug 30, 2012 - Vermithrax Perjorative #1

Just finished a Vermithrax Perjorative and am about to "age" the bones. I was going to use Minwax, but a friend last night recommended the Games Workshop glazes, as he said you can airbrush it and it will naturally pool into the crevices... I think I can get a more even/thorough coat with the airbrush, so I ask you guys - any one here a GW modeler? You use that stuff?

Here it is before I added the other wing:

Have not used the stuff. Kit looks great. I saw it at Wonderfest but didn't have the dough for it. Cant wait to see how you finish it up. You need to bring it next year and display it next to my Pegasus version!

That would be cool in a diorama if you could add some blasted flesh and guts and recreate the scene from the end of the movie where the king is standing there with his sword poised over the carcass taking credit for slaying the dragon.

What's the end look you're going for? Clean, or aged and discolored?

I would stick w/ the Minwax or use oil paints. To me, the bones should not have an even coverage, unless a really clean look is what you're going for. For mine, I intend to make those bones aged and all kinds of discolored!

I use a lot of GW paints on my pieces, but haven't tried the washes / glazes.

I'm going for the "displayed inside the rotunda at a local museum" look.... I'll do a Minwax test this weekend!

That's what I'm thinking! If not, we can cry about it over pit beef some time soon! I need to take you to the other place - they have better fries, too!

    LOL!! I'm in!

Pics of the final look? Seeing yours makes me want to do mine, but I don't have anywhere to display the damn thing!

Not quite done - waiting for the oil-based surfaces to fully cure before dull coating!

    Killer effect though!

I had a lot of fun applying the paint... little bit of the old art training kicked in. This is all brush work, fellas. Boom. Yummy.

That looks fantastic! I love the shot of the spine section, the paint really makes the details pop!

    Authentic beyond belief!

    Thanks guys!

You know, I get a little tired of the slavish devotion to studio scale accuracy every once in a while, and it's good to stretch the creative wings every chance I get. A lot of tings have been calling me lately - the Wingnut Wings kits I have, my own designs I want to bring from my head into the real world, and some fine art for the house. Finding the time can be a challenge, and while it's great to make a model look exactly like it did from the hands of our ILM heroes, there's a certain lack of creativity and drive to those projects. You may even be scratch building, but your're still following in someone else's footsteps, sometimes slavishly. It's dangerous to lose your own "voice" when you do that, especially for any length of time.

Personal thoughts, of course, and it doesn't make the work we do in these forums any less impressive, but something like Charles' scratch built spaceship is just flat out amazing, on levels that most of the stuff we create will fail to reach, by their very nature.

So yeah, painting a pile of resin bones was a nice breath of fresh air!

I just hope the dang thing DRIES eventually!
