Aug 2, 2012 - Tips on cleaning measuring containers after using rtv and catalysts? #1

    sorry for the stupid question.

but what do you guys normally do with your containers in which you've poured in the rtv silicone and catalyst liquids?

ive used 2 seperate reusable plastic jugs for mine and have some tiny bits of silicone still left on the sides of the jug. how do you normally clean them? obviously you can't wash them and throw the stuff down the sink.

is it better to just wash them outside and throw the excess into a bag?

    any tips welcome

im a total beginner to this stuff, so any tips would be appreciated
    thanks

PS, anyone who's used polycraft general purpose silicone, how long does it normally take to cure?
ive shoved my mold into a warm treehouse, so should get some extra heat.

If I make a mold I always leave it 24 hours, better safe than sorry. I use the white small buckets, they have a waxy surface. When I mix up RTV or resin I allow just a little extra which I coat the inside of the bucket with, when its dry silicone will all pull out in one go. If it's resin push in the sides to break it up a bit but this should also come out in one bit with no cleaning needed.

Polypropelene containers rock! I use them for mixing. After I am done applying whatever I mixed I just leave them alone. Cured silicone and PlastiPaste just peel right off.

    cool thanks for the info.
just hope the first half of my 2 part mold cures ok.

also, whats the procedure for a hollow mold?

my piece is only 2cm high by 3cm width. i want to make a mold of this piece.

do i just make a tiny flat clay bed, place the item on top and pour over some rtv silicone?

then once cured, i can just pour in a tiny bit of casting resin?

    the part is really tiny.
