    Jul 8, 2012 - Threading PVC - Lathe? #1

At Home Depot the other day i was looking into something to Thread PVC Pipes for the Hilt/Handle of my inFAMOUS 2 Cole's Amp weapon project. A guy working there said i should look into getting a Lathe, after leaving i have realized i know nothing about Lathe's and i don't know what to even look for...Anyone know what i should do here?

Couldn't you just use a pipe threader? Pipe Threader - Harbor Freight Tools

I hate to break the news to you but that is not expensive when it comes to stuff like this. A good lathe would cost much more then that... not trying to be a downer, just giving you a heads up.

Oh i know, ive spent a ton already on materials for a few things...But i need to make some money off something before i spend a ton on something like that. Already with resin and bondo and a power sander and paper and glue and the list goes on, is there no other way to make a thread?

Pretty sure you need very special equipment to do a thread on a lathe. Plus, the least expensive lathe at harbor freight is on sale for $120 and the chuck you would need to hold the pipe is $40.

Have you looked are for a tool rental company? It might not be cheaper than buying, but do you expect to ever need to thread pipe again?

You won't find threading on a cheap wood lathe. Micro mark has a small machine lathe that threads, also, Grizzley and Harbor Frieght have a small one but not as nice. Then on up to 9x20 metal lathes.

Yeah a lathe for threading is pretty speciallist, though I'm sure i've seen a tool that goes around the outside of the pipe and sprials around threading the pipe? but I've never seen them very big

$30 - $70 for a manual pipe threader is the cheap way to do it. A lathe, even a small one, will be well over $1000 once you add in the required tooling.

Look up hand threading tools, you may be able to rent them from a tool rental company, we use them for rigid metal pipe occasionally, they probably will work for plastic pipe. Let me see if I can find a pic...

Here you go rent a die handle --> http://www.tatesrents.com/equipment....ry=34&key=6852

And a pipe die for your Pipe diameter like -->http://www.tatesrents.com/equipment....ry=34&key=6846

You clamp your pipe down and rotate the die around the pipe to get the thread length you need. With metal pipe we usually need a big guy and cutting oil to make it work with plastic who knows, but better than buying a tool.
