Stargate Universe Destiny Potential 3d printed model

yup, very inventive way to do it. that way you can light the chevrons and the symbols as well. it's interesting how the use of acrylic and lighting is prevalent in the SG universe. Almost every light in Atlantis was acrylic.

You could also use that same method on pretty much all the different gates. Pretty handy for sure. Nice work.

If you ever do want to light something they do clear acrylic with mirror backing on it which bounces the light around nicely. Will be getting the destiny gate finished in the next two weeks then cranking out the atlantis gate and milky way gate in quick succession after that. Thankfully the other two gates share some components. I also have the dhd schematics from the show so just need to scale them to match the gates. Finally found a behind the scenes vid that has shown me the thickness of the gate and the detailing around the outside rim. Fun little idea that the prop of the destiny gate only had the front half of the gate spinning, the rear stayed still. The cgi had the entire thing spinning which is the correct way. SGU really was on a tight budget. Will be putting the floor chevron on the pedestal for the destiny gate as well, so when the gate is put in it the chevron will be there as in the show.

Tom, do you want your gate and pedestal seperate, or all doing in one piece? If seperate the pedestal will be in two pieces to allow the gate to be put in and removed at will, but a single piece will be more stable on a diorama model. The size of yours does allow for it. sciroccojunky's is too big to print in one piece.

Oh, forgot to mention, will be throwing in the space thrusters for attachment to the Atlantis gate in case you decide to wall mount it so it will look like a space gate. There will also be a snap in event horizon that will fit all three gates. The dhd's central button will also be seperate so that the dhd can have a control crystal chamber beneath it as in the show. Will only be a simple detail but it will look fantastic painted or with the crystals cast from the print in different coloured clear resin.

I want it separated pls, I will do some work on it later and it will be much better to have the gate alone :)

One single piece gate and two piece pedestal it is then. As I said, the destiny gate will be done within a fortnight as destiny herself will take up the majority of modelling hours.

Forgot to mention, when it comes time, everything will be done through PayPal. That way everyone is protected and no bank details from either side change hands. Let me know if anyone doesn't have an account, I'll sort something out.

Captainreynolds, My goal would be to have the FTL, as well as the windows, lightable. I guess that would mean a separate part for the FTL strip, that I could then cast in a clear resin. I think the photo below best ilustrates the effect I'd be going for. Does that seem doable?

Thanks Arcturus vfx for the photo.

Sorry for the lateness of the reply, been really busy at work. Yep, seems perfectly doable. Going to remodel to accommodate the separate FTL strip. Also going to split it into the separate pieces for printing prior to detailing so details aren't going over split lines.

A little progress on the gates. Destiny's gate is coming along, and made a good bit of progress on the other two gates as well.

Last two are just a bit of messing around with rendering the event horizon. Destiny gate pics coming soon.

Made a bit more progress on the gate today, been focussing on the chevrons as they have been putting up a fight. Still not entirely happy with them so might redo them before detailing them.

nice dude!

Looks pimp!

Well I wasn't happy with the chevrons so I've remodelled them using surfacing and it's improved them massively. The new improved pics will be in tomorrows run. What's been done so far is forming the basis of both the Earth and Atlantis gates. Thankfully the destiny gate hasn't got half as much detailing on it, but there are a hell of a lot less references for Destiny's gate. Working off the images of the original sg1 gate prop sections sold at auction so every detail that's on the original screen gate is on this gate model.

i've got a grip of high res pics of the destiny gate. Front and back. I think I've got some high res pics of the atlantis gate as well. The only gate I've not a lot of pics of is the SG1 gate. But I do have a cast off of a screen used chevron. You want details of the SG1 gate, check out Andy19422 He's got almost a full section and has a hands on knowledge of every nook and cranny. The back details you can actually check out the 1:1 gate build thread in the replica movie props section. They have a screen used back section. I'm aching to get a cast off of one of those. When Andy has his section done I'll have one. Though it will be months off.

Anyway, if you need some high res pics of the destiny gate Here is a grip of SGU pics. I think there is more on the first page too. Most are high res. Lots of good stuff there. The guy that did that spent some time creating that group.

Can't wait to see your SGU gate renders.

CaptainReynolds, The gate is looking beautiful. I was going to try to model a Kino in Solidworks, you're inspiring me to get back to it. Can't wait for more updates. P.S. no need to apologize for taking time to respond. We all have stuff going on, and I'm probably the worst offender on taking forever to respond.

Well I'm working off the original gate props for both the sg1 and Atlantis gates, not even remotely short of resources for them. The thread you linked me to has given me some really nice shots of the destiny chevrons so has been immensely helpful, but it didn't have any shots of the back which is what i'm desperately short of, from the shadowy shots I have of the back from an angle, it looks to be the same as the front just without the symbols. So shots of the back would be handy.

Thanks. And glad I've inspired you. I actually teach solidworks over here at the university part time. And don't worry about response time, I've had worse. Just re-cutting my teeth on the heavy detail work as the last time I did the level of detail required by the destiny project was in my uss kelvin build two years ago. Really annoyed that the files got corrupted. They were only saved on the university network and a lot of people lost files when it died a year ago. Might rebuild again at some point.

yeah, i've got a ton of pics of almost everything in SGU. Even nabbed pics of auction items in case I'd need them later at some point. two of those pics are from auction items. One is stefans gate sections.

Hi Folks,
Dunno if this may help, but I have acquired what are 2 large spaceships from VIP
I dont have pics or descriptions [its a long story], but being VIP sold in the main all the SGU stuff and very little from SG1 and Atlantis,
Then its a good bet that these ships are therefore from SGU :)
I will receive them in about 6-7 months, and then we'll know what we have
If its something good, then they will be replicated for all you nice people who like me are into spaceships :)
- and mother of God, if one of them is a model of Destiny herself ?, then we will all be in heaven :)

If i can get a copy of the 3D files i can pony up the gate blueprints. As well as the off world platform and gateroom ramp and clamp blueprints for modeling. It would give the movie style top chevron details for yet another variation too.

Do you mean a copy of the ones I'm building or a copy of the digital files from the show that were made for scenes where the gate was floating around in space? If it's my stuff then I'm doing the off world platform for all three, dhd's for milky way and Pegasus gates and the space thrusters for the space gates. Is there anything else you need as well?
