Jun 13, 2012 - Star Trek TOS Enterprise Wood Sculpt - Done! #1

While I like all the Star Trek series, I'm ultimately a TOS geek. That show just had the magic...

I thought I'd take a shot a creating more of an art-style sculpt of the Enterprise rather than just a straight replica.

The build took about three weeks - the stand took almost as long as the ship and I created 2 prior versions that I discarded (they just didn't look right).

The sculpt is about 18" long and, coincidentally, about 18" tall when on the stand.

The lines on the saucer are etched in with a razor.

The final version will have a small transparent dome under the saucer.

It is way more difficult to line up the saucer and nacelles than I thought it would be.

There is more detail on the nacelles than shows in the pictures.

The sensor dish on the front is tiny -not easy to craft from pine.

I'm really pleased with the detail on the front of the body -lots of time with a dremel and sandpaper.

That's amazing. Are you going to stain it?

This is gorgeous! Have you considered trying your hand at the other Enterprises?

    Thanks for the kind words.

I haven't stained it, but here's why: I'm going to try mold and cast it. Test pieces to follow.

I've got a couple other projects I'd like to tackle next. I think it'd be fun to do an Enterprise refit version (I always thought that ship was gorgeous). I love TNG but the curves on that ship are a little intimidating.

Too bad, a nice cherry stained enterprise would be a cool display piece. Maybe you can save the master after the molding process.

You know, I keep looking at this and thinking that if it were to be damaged in any way during the molding process, it would be a crying shame

If it will be, I would seriously reconsider to just give it a coat or two of clear matt varnish.

I agree with what others have said. A nice wood stain and varnish would look great on this. Maybe do the engine domes in a red mahogany.

Once you get the molds/casts, totally stain and varnish that baby. That's a beautiful piece of work.

Thanks everyone, your positive comments are very much appreciated.

I love the idea of staining the piece cherry, thanks for the suggestion.

I created a one-piece mold for the nacelle supports (I think that's what they're called) and did a couple of pulls. I finished the pieces with a coat of gold followed by a quick coat of brown, then wiped away the excess.

What do you think? (the pictures are showing lighter than the pieces really are)

Top work, old bean! That would look good with a white bleached finish.
