Mate, that makes me look at my cockpit with embarrassment...The finish of the card surface looks like crap compared to yours. I may have to redo mine...
Aw, don't do that! Remember, yours intimidated me at first when I saw it!
Yours also seems to capture the "feel" of the original that mine so far lacks. It's an unidentifiable quality, that "mood" thing: mine, even if it comes out as I hope it might, will always look like a miniature.

In other words, no it does not look like "crap"...I refuse to agree with you there!

I guess I am just feeling a little jaded with it all today....I need to get my finger outta my butt and get moving. I may leave it until tomorrow.

Don't get jaded! At least, don't get jaded to the point you think of quitting!
I had a few jaded days so far, having what seemed like to many unforeseen problems, but I finally got to where I can continue.

It sounds to me like you need another one of these... lol

I'll be okay Mate, I need more aluminium tubing to carry on with the spine, so I will get that tomorrow. I think it's just the CM that's getting to me at the moment. I have this memorial concert to sing at this weekend and That is putting a lot of pressure on me, too. Trying to learn songwords and arrangements in time. So much to do and so little time in which to do it!!!

You sing, as well? Wow, your life seems to contain a diversity of experience mine lacks! You wouldn't want me to sing...all those youtube singing dogs are far more harmonious than I!

Oh, and when Eagle time does come, remember...

Can't say I have! I really don't know what to tackle next: like you, I'd like parts to go back and forth on, when I might burn out on one particular part or another!

    Planning...
I printed out interior sides of the command module. These
versions are are not the finished versions: these are merely to be used as templates for the final pieces. The overall dimensions look okay (control panels, height of "bathroom tiles" etc.). I need to start by figuring out the proportions of the trapezoidal boxes behind the pilot's chairs.
    eagle-0136a.jpgeagle-0137a.jpgeagle-0138a.jpg
The main issue at this point is the back corners. Clearly they need to be trimmed, otherwise they'll stick out beyond the exterior of the module. I just have to establish how much to trim relative to the trapezoidal fixtures. Shouldn't be too bad...but we shall see!

    Thanks, Karl...but don't be bitter!
Like I keep saying, there are so many hundreds of places I (or rather, we) could screw up, this could blow up at any time...then I will be bitter!
I'm probably over-thinking my approach as I go along, but I'd rather do that than take the chance of painting myself into a corner from which there is no escape!

Finally, a bit of an update!
What was I doing again? Oh, yeah...building an Eagle!
I cut out a strip of styrene to make the strip of "bathroom tiles" along the center outer edges of the command module inner walls. It appears to look right when placed on the inside for a test-fit, so I'm ready to start building the wall details.
    eagle-0141a.jpgeagle-0142a.jpg
I printed out higher-resolution versions of the square control panels. They always seemed inconveniently placed for a pilot to use, but they look cool so that's all that really matters! Besides, maybe they are mostly infrequently used controls for various and sundry ship functions. Anyhoo, I'm going to cut out the rectangles and glue them on individually.
    eagle-0143b.jpgeagle-0144b.jpg
I painted the tiles and glued a sheet of styrene over the cardboard. Now to begin the fun of cutting out the controls and gluing them in place. Here I suppose I could've printed these with a white line between the rectangular control panels and just glued it on as is, but I thought the panels just having even a sheet of paper thickness with the styrene between the cracks would have a more three-dimensional look, even if only subtly. So...I opted to to it the hard way! This is turning out to be very painstaking, trying to evenly space the white ares between the rectangles.

That's a bloody awesome update!!! It's really coming together now for you! Your cockpit is going to be mustard when done! Welcome to my world of spacing the individual panels! You could always stick each panel to a piece of styrene sheet to give more 3D effect. At least you didn't have the stupidity to start cutting each single button and gluing them on....it's one of the main reasons that I have halted work for now on the CM interior, as the work involved is exhausting and VERY time consuming. Plus, you are working at a smaller scale than me!!!
Well done, Bob! well worth the wait!

Okay, guys....I have been more than a little occupied this week, due to a family bereavement and today has been the first opportunity I have had in a week or so to build anything at all. Right now, it's the only release/escape I have and today, getting back to it, was like taking size seven shoes off of size ten feet at the end of a marathon run....

So I have started working on the cage that sits directly behind the Command module.

This has taken the whole afternoon, believe it or not. Tomorrow, I will strengthen each joint with Chemical metal and then sand them smooth, ready for primer.
Here are a few pics of the cage with the first half of the spine held on top. Just to see how it looks...

At this point, I was starting to get an inkling of just what a monster I am creating here......I was more than a little scared at this point. The wife was holding the spine in place and I was waiting for her to ....ahem....say something, like, "It's big, isn't it!" I was VERY scared by this stage....She said nothing at all............so I added the Command module and took some more pics...

Still she said nothing except, "This bit I am holding is quite heavy, isn't it"
    I continued snapping pics....

I stopped then...I was going to ask her to hold the test engine bell on the end, that I made earlier in this build thread but I chickened out.
For the first time, I am getting a true picture of the size of this thing and it is H U G E ! ! !

    I L O V E it!!!

    Wow!!
That IS going to be a monster! Looks like it'll work well photographically, too, as the large size lends itself to actual perspective changes, giving it the real illusion of size. Though, "illusion" may be the wrong word in your case! No wonder you could cut out each individual button in that module! Very impressive...and inspiring!

And funny you should mention gluing my control panels to cardboard and cutting out the rectangles for gluing down to the styrene. That is exactly what's happening here. I was not at all happy with the fake 3-d effect. I don't mind a lot of work for a little effect, but a lot of work for no effect wasn't going to be acceptable! I had some extremely thin white cardboard which was just screaming to be used, so I'm heeding its' call! So, I pulled off the panels, and using a very fine sandpaper sanded off the glue remnants on the styrene for a fresh attempt. Results tomorrow!

I totally agree with the "lot of work for a little effect" philosophy! If you are going to spend a couple of thousand hours, over the space of a year or so, building a dream model, why skimp on the best bits???
The devil may be in the detail but, what an angel she becomes when the work is done!
