I traced the door onto a piece of foam core so I can cut out a piece from which to make the red and black door frame. I test-fitted the door, and it seemed to be okay.
    eagle-0088a.jpgeagle-0089a.jpg
Then I proceeded to glue a layer of paper onto the inner foam edge to provide a surface onto which I can glue and paint the final pieces. After trimming off the outside edge of the door frame, that received a layer of paper as well.

I glued the door to a thin later of styrene which will provide the back side of the door. I gave the plastic door a couple layers of paint... not much to explain about that!

When the paint and glue were dry, I once again test-fitted the parts. Now I can proceed to making raised pieces for the door frame and prepare the surfaces for painting!

At the very least,I just would like to tidy mine up a bit...The side wall control panels are dog rough on mine. I want to replace them with the printed ones like I sent to you, and you used. They look great! Your cockpit feels "sterile" because you have no seats in it yet. I felt the same way about mine; there was all this clean empty space and it felt cold. the seats changed that feel completely for me. Hopefully, these two pics will show you exactly what I was feeling at the time.
I felt that I had the proportions right but without the seats, it all just felt....empty....not real. Does that make any sense??

Wow, Darren...that's looking incredible! And I can't believe how quickly it's coming together! Meanwhile, I've been slogging away at just the door...
Based on your little Captain Kirk chair, I expect you'll do exemplary work on these seats, too!
I'd better git a move on, here..! lol

I find it utterly incredible, that we are using completely different materials, completely different build methods and working in completely different scales and yet the results look so very much alike! Superb workmanship, Bob! I love what you're doing and I am learning a whole new raft of methods....

The comparisons are pretty amazing, Darren!
I was wondering about your yellow wall panels, they didn't seem to be plain paper...now I know they aren't! Good idea, frosting the back side like that, maintaining the interior gloss! I'm still puzzling over how I'm going to do those.
Thus far, your build is really capturing the "mood" of the cockpit, too. I always did wonder about that: being that Alpha was a rather colorless place in a way, yet inside the Eagle was bursting with color!
I hope you finished the Shredded Wheat before you cut up the box!

Well there is nothing stopping us using each others ideas and build methods, if it suits to do so.

I am sure you can find an orange or yellow carrier bag from somewhere.....

Something will leap out at me, I'm sure. It's always funny how when doing a build, so many everyday items suddenly are seen at a different scale, and for all new purposes!

So are you going to make all six doors before moving on the the next stage, or just the one for now? How do you think you will play it?

Not sure yet. I've got the other doors drawn up and ready to cut, but besides my index fingertip's painful gash, my fingers have taken quite a beating the last few days. Dismantling an old piece of furniture just today did a number on them also. So it seems that whatever I grasp, there is pain associated with it! So, I'll either get brave and do them, or wait it out a few days and work on other parts in the meantime. We shall see!

(It's not that I'm whiny or a weakling or anything, lol, but the problem is that when I'm slicing into the materials, I'd rather be concentrating on the cut I'm making, and not on the way I'm holding the blade to lessen the pain. If I'm holding it in an awkward position for me, it may show up in the results! I'd hate to make a cut, then have to re-do it because it came out wrong!)

Trouble is, by then you'll be so far ahead of me that I'll never catch up!! Our progress ratio at this point attests to that!

Just a small update before the weekend.... I spent this morning building a few instrument panels for the pilot side of the Eagle Cockpit. The size is ridiculously small for this level of detail but I am, nevertheless happy with the result. Every single button has been added, as per the TV show and is screen accurate. I will hopefully finish this side tonight and then hold it there probably until Monday at the earliest. Anyway, here are a couple of pics to show you the progress. Sorry about the thumb, but it does give a good indication of scale.

Thanks for looking in and have a great weekend, everyone!!!!

Well....I see the bar got raised a little higher than the last time I was here! That's really great! It "feels" so right, probably 'cause of your meticulous attention to details!
Now I can only wonder how I'll make out at an even smaller scale!
(maybe if Atlanthia is away for the weekend, this might be my chance to catch up!)
Seriously, that's some fine work, there!

Thanks, Bob, but I think these shots are too close. It looks a lot better from a bit further away. Each of those panels will sit on a British penny, without overhanging the edge. The details are a little "shaky" up close like that, so I will post different pics, I think...
