scrap built, scratch build, space thingy.

I have always loved taking things apart, and keeping the resulting junk.

I have decided to put it together into a spaceship of some kind. However I like working models, so here goes
20140914_152648.jpg
(sorry camera phone wrong way round)

the front wheel is the inside of a motor from a vhs player, to me it looks like an engine of some futuristic kind. It also spins.

so a quick rummage in my parts bins.
and 20140914_152655.jpg

the motor is from a childs toy, the frame work (better seen in previous photo) is from a clock and the black disk joining the parts together is from a cd player.

a quick 1/2 hour later and it works. (finding the correct grub screw to connect the motor to the frame without fouling the inside of the motor) it dosent quite sit straight yer because I want the front part to come of so it keeps the color when I finally paint it all.

Next after another rummage.

The inside of my daughters old hair dryer. the sheath was reversed and stuck on the other end then inserted into a pringles tube.

The fan still works a little wiring later and both spin (with some led lights it will look pretty good. But whats the point in doing this work if nobody sees the inner workings. So

now to find a greebly to fit between the two (I will probably keep the foil inner of the tube when painting Just age it a little)

Even though it looks very little there is about 3 hours work in this so far...

will keep you posted if you want.

Okay so I was needing the middle part, and since I started this thing a month ago my very cheap 15 year old planner died on me. This is the resulting scavenge
motor assembly.jpg.

So I have found the middle bit for my engine. After 4 hours trying to get them all to line up and still use an inline motor for the front spinner, I gave up. Part of the engine will hide behind a cowling and I will fit a friction motor to turn the front spinner.

So with a dremmel the front protuberant was cut off. A small hole drilled into the reminder spindle to take the small spindle from the back of the front spinner. and the result is below.

So much neater and the weight is easier to balance.

Now for that front spindle. I tried many types of cone shaped bits. None of them looked right. So delving deep into my stash of..um junk...I found this.
fromnt motor greebly.jpg

This came out the tube of an old telly. And the best thing I get to play with electrics again.
ledassembly.jpg

The 3 holes were 3mm. But my LED's are 5mm so a quick SLOW drill and it now houses 2 leds. One is red the other is from a £15.00 remote helicopter which flashes red and blue.
The final front assembly is as below. Thanks to Gorrila Glue that seems to bond everything together (after 48 hours that is). So front half of engine is as below.

The blue tape is insulating one of the led leads. Now on to the back of the engine Assembly. Photos will follow.

I know this is my second post of the day..But you are now up to date...I work for myself and have taken a day away from work to play..I mean carry on with the engine.

So after finding the middle part from an old planner. connecting the two became a headache.
rear engine detail.jpg

As you can see from the right of this picture, the hair dryer heating element is mounted on cardboard. Gluing a heavy motor onto thin edges of cardboard is pointless. I wanted to keep the transition between the parts as smooth as possible without lots of structure surrounding the engine.

Knowing that their will be cowling over the top, I decided to run a frame to help support it all.

Yes it looks ugly, but dont fret it does get hidden. Thankfully i thought ahead enough to think about mounting the motor and a bracket at the centre of balance thanks to an aforementioned helicopter.

And a final shot for a little while, with the start of the cowling in place (aka a pringles tube).

One nifty looking weird engine type thing....now for the main body
