    Jun 14, 2012 - Resin model help needed #1

I bought a resin model kit from Wonderfest and I need to know the best way to glue pieces together and what is the best product for filling in gaps and seams. Thanks in advance.

Steve, depending on kit, after cleaning up the mold seams. The best thing I know of is drilling and pinning and epoxy. And epoxy putty as filler. hope that helps.

Firstly I would wash every piece in soapy water ie dish washing liquid. Get Rid of any residue and save yourself the headache of the paint not sticking later. Depending on the kit use the above method or if it's just a small kit you may not need to drill and pin it. For glue I use a superglue with a kicker if necessary on smaller parts and the two part epoxy on larger. As for seems, once cleaned up I use tamiya putty or BONDO, again depending on the size.

cool thanks. I'm guessing 'pinning' is drilling into each piece, gluing in a pin and then attaching the pieces that way?

I forgot about washing, so that's something I can do tonight.

Pinning is where you would drill holes into both pieces and Insert brass rod as a shaft. For example. If you were putting the wings on an x wing. I would make a small template with say cardboard. And mark two holes in it. Place it on the fuselage where the wing meets and mark the two holes. Then do the same on the wing. That way the two will match up.
Then insert some brass rod into the holes on the fuse and then slide the wing on and glue. If you do this on all four wings they will align perfectly and the rod strengthens the join. If that makes any sence???

yeah, washing is pretty important on any kit... I forget that again and again, and again and again I end up asking myself, "now why don't these two pieces stick together like they should."
