Re: RC Sand Crawler build.

Finished the hullsides and front completely now. Just the top, engines and tracks to do now with the sand, which is really a half and half mix with matt white. I really do need to finish this by Friday as I've a Halloween project to finish!
Dry brushed the detailed bits in ie the sand marks. About the most difficult part to get looking right against the studio model. I'll go back and add flecks to the yellow and white rusting areas at the very end. The brush strokes tend to pick out the panelling better than just leaving it to the airbrush, which produces a to even effect if your not carefull.
I have to say I'm really enjoying the process of layering on the paint. Next to the Radient I think this is my favorite of Randys kits so far. It makes you work to get the finish right!
First pics in normal light. Its surprising just how important it is to paint in good light or the whole tone of the build changes.

Re: RC Sand Crawler build.

Finished !!! (well almost- just need to spatter some sand effect muck with a toothbrush across the treads!). Busy weekend so this is it for now. I have to say that of all Randys kits I have enjoyed this one the best. Its a straight forward build but demanding enough if you want to super detail it.Working out the painting scheme and patterns makes it the most challenging kit I've ever done, but I really liked doing it.
It looks better in normal sunlight as it picks out the deeper rusts and detail but these will do it for now.

Re: RC Sand Crawler build.

Now that is some damn fine paint work, what did you use to do the sand streaking?

That is really an amazing replica you have there, great work on the paint. I have yet to get my hands on a RC kit but i think i may breakdown and pick up a SCrawler after seeing this build...

Re: RC Sand Crawler build.

Halloween went very well last night as I turned my front garden into a graveyard. Well up into the hundreds for visitors .If you think my paintwork is good you want to have seen some of the costumes that were around last night.
Fantastic stuff, alot of effort from the adults as well as for the kids this year. There were zombies to die for!!! Unfortunately though there was not a Starwars character amoungst them all. I may have to change that next year!!
So whilst I sober up this morning I'll take you through what I can remember. After the red oxide basecoat I put on grey and yellows spots with an airbrush then applied a latex masking with various bits ie toothpicks ,sculpting chisels, anything that gave an broken pattern for the paint chips. Then I oversprayed and peeled off just after my last coat of brown ,then I lightly oversprayed to give it a more orangey look.
The hull paint was a combination of just three browns ,Flat Brown, Dark Tan and Rust, but I played around with them by adding in drops of white or yellow , mixed it up ,picked a panel ,sprayed it and let it dry.If I liked it it stayed on.
I start with light colours first, because I found when you spray a dark over a light the top colour always dries a shade paler and it blends in better. Then it was simply a matter of working around the hull doing various panels. I didn't mask anything with tape but used a piece of styrene to cover the top edge of a panel, then sprayed downward. You get a tiny amount of overspray but because of the scale of build it looks realistic.
The sand streaking was just drybrushing.Pick the top of your panel, put styrene over it, then pull your brush down as vertically and lightly as possible a few times until you build up the streaks. You better practise it though because its a bit tricky to get it to taper off properly. I touched it up with an airbrush later when I added the sand blown effects which again was a mixtures of dirty whites and sand. This all went on last after I'd done the blacking so it looked like it had been through a sand storm recently.
Thats it really. The pics tell the story. I learnt alot of these techniques when I did the Radient which,up until the sandcrawler was my favorite build because of the extensive weathering on that bird.
Thanks for the comments gents and I hope this helps .Dave, it was great fun to have you there building at the same time as me. Guy, I expect wonderous things of yours ,having seen all your builds! That lit cockpit in the snowspeeder is superb, ILM couldn't have done any better!!. Mike, the X wing will be finished in the next couple of weeks. The engines were done the same time as I did the crawler. I'll have a few days off then get back on it.

Re: RC Sand Crawler build.

Thanks for that. It remains my favorite to date, but I've yet to finish off the Salzo X wing, and that is going to be an interestingly subtle paint job. Certainly it will be my last build of this year anyway, and I'm look for next years challenges once funds replenish. Something that will weather nicely anyway!

You & Dave made me start mine, I'm about 80% there with the structure & am hoping to be painting by the weekend. Just want to give you another nod before I start a paint thread. Hats off.

Excellent build And it really came out nicely. Especially all that detailing work that went into constucting the engines. That really paid off
