R2D2 Garden gnome?

My backyard has a little thing by my garden that timewarner cable uses to cover the cable hookups... its shaped just like R2D2 (see pic)



So I thought I'd turn it into a little R2 unit! Instead of painting all the details I thought I'd take the easy way out and print out the body with all the details on it like this (taken off paper-replika pdf)



For the dome I was planning on painting it with rustoleum chrome? any suggestions for what to use for that is appreciated.

The legs I was going to make out of pepakura using the JoePep file. I will have to glue/epoxy them on after attaching the paper that the body is printed on.

Will fiberglass resin be enough to keep the paper waterproof? Will it fade in the sun regardless? I live in Nebraska so there is usually lots of snow in the winter and lots of sun and heat in the summer... any suggestions on what to use to waterproof it?

That will be cool. Just hope the cable company does not mind you doing this. Why is the seam not under a leg on the graphics instead up the middle of the back?

not sure why they put the seam there, but it will be facing away from my yard so it won't be very noticable. The cable guy only uses it when they gotta disconnect/connect someones service so I doubt they'll care if I decorate it!

Love it! Can't wait to see it completed! Wonder if my wife would let me put a resin R2 next to our Garden Gnome?

If the cable companies there are like they are here, you'll be billed for a replacement, as they'll see it as vandalizing their property. Best option before doing anything: ask first.

that's a funny idea, but just be careful the cable company doesn't get all uppity on you.

Great idea! Be sure to paint the bottom/unused portion a neutral color like green, gray, or black

What if you print out the texture on the same vinyl that they use to make car decals..that way you can easily remove it if the cable company gets bitchy

this is so funny, when i was a little kid we had the same one at our house and i would always look at it and say hey that looks a lot like r2! really cant wait to see what you do with it, the vinyl is a really smart idea just to cover your tracks incase the cable people dont like star wars as much as you do

personally I would just take a measurement of the diameter and get some pvc and wrap that with the vinyl skin so it can be easily removed. Love the idea though
