Normandy SR2 1/180 scale model

i'm new to these forums, so.. Hi everyone
i have recently started work on a model of the Normandy SR2 from the video game Mass Effect 2 at 1/180 scale. I've seen a few mass effect models here and there and i figured you guys might be interested in this. cause this is the first Model of a ship from that game series. (to my knowledge)

in bioware's reluctance to give any actual size details on the ship i had to figure it out myself and i feel i've come to a reasonably accurate conclusion.
here are two of the size charts i made for the SR2 and a length chart for the SR1 (from mass effect 1)

Note the above measurements are based on my estimates of the width of the airlock which i estimate is close to or exactly 2 meters wide.

i intend for my model to be 1.2 meters or 4 feet long. hence its 1/180 scale.

Also i personaly dont like static models. models that just sit there and have no moving parts. so mine will have moving parts.
here is a short feature list of everything i intend to implement into my model.
* First the wings will partialy retract into the fusilage in two stages.(by pulling a single lever on the bottom of the ship, both wings will retract)

* Also while the wings are moving the rear part of the engine will extend outward.

* The cockpit windows will have armor plates that slide down over it. (using a fairly simple rail system)

* The Thanix cannon extends from the bottom of the fusilage. it will be concealed like in the game.

* The hanger door can open and close. and feature a full hanger interior (with lights)

* The small airlock on the left side of the fusilage next to the cockpit will slide open. behind it will be a closed door.

* And last but not least it will have a small battery hatch (also concealed) for the LED lighting system. (engines and cannons will light up blue, fusilage windows will light up yelowish orange)

note that i intend to hide the butons and levers for all these features on the model without them looking out of place. like you see on alot of toy models. the function of the model will serve its exterior. no compromises.

also note i am building this model using Maya 2011 and then printing the individual pieces in 3d.

Here are some shots of the CG model and its interior thus far.
Note.
Green = support structure
Red = Mechanism

Here's is a small preview of how the mechanism in the tail end of the engines will work.

Default. Wing are fully extended

Retracted. Wings are fully retracted

This mechanism will be in all 4 engines. and will be activated by the retracting or extending of the wings.

and now for the pieces that i have finished thus far.
the tip of the Left Main Engine. the front deceleration thruster can be positioned 50 degree's 25 up 25 down. and it will stay in position due to a small ratchet mechanism i built into the inside of it.

Second piece of the engine tip but this part has mounting points for the wing.

hope you enjoy the progress i will be making over the comming months and Feedback is very much apriciated.

P.S. sorry i am throwing around alot of accurate meter dimensions and very inacurate feet dimensions. its because i'm used to the metric system.

Absolutely incredible work! I've seen some of your progress before and am very impressed. Will be following this for sure!

Was actually trying to figure out sizes myself - see post 10 and 12 here:

Re: Normandy SR2 1/180 scale model

next piece of my model is due to arrive either wednesday or thurseday.
it'll be a test print of several of the gears, rollers and their mounts and the top cover of the middle engine piece. The purple highlighted piece here

the reason i didnt go for the big bottom one aswel is that its big and rather expenive. and since the top piece also has the same rollers mounts i figured i'd better test it on a cheaper piece. My measurements are pretty accurate but these printers have a minimum acuracy of 0.2 mm so there is always a small margain for error.
based on my measurements this engine when the engine pod is fully extended will be 75 cm long.

Re: Normandy SR2 1/180 scale model

I second the question about the kit lol. I haven't played 2 yet but is the ship basically the same? I hope you will share the Pepakura files (i'm assuming that's what you'll use to print it). Too bad the action figures are 7" tall or this would be awesome in scale, all we need now is a Mako model.

I dont know yet about making a kit. I dont want to call down the wrath of Bioware and EA upon my little project.

by printing it i actualy mean printing it in 3d as in printing the 3d files in plastic.
the ship is a little different from the first game. its larger and it has some more weapons. also the wings are in a fixed position unlike the first model where there each engine is attached to a individualy poseable wing.

here a pic of what the final model will look like.

this is the model from the game. note mine

i know i've already been talking to modelnutz from there regarding the possibility of a kit once its done. nothing has been decided yet though so dont get your hopes up just yet. and i shared my reference library of the SR2 with him for his smaller scale version of the SR2.

Re: Normandy SR2 1/180 scale model

new components update.

The smaller components were a little smaller than i expexted especialy the rollers. but i have found a new set of pins that will hold those in place so no problem
that peg thats suposed to hold the longer gear on was too thick and i could put the gear on it so i'm going to re-order that. its small and easy to fix so i wont go broke over it.
the large engine cover fit like a glove all the openings in it are perfect no blockages or print errors what so ever. next up the base of the engine cover. need to make a few small tweaks to it before i order
The hull construction so far is now 47 centimeter long (a little over 18 inches)

enjoy and, as always feedback and comments are much apriciated. (now to get back to finishing LotSB
