New Hasbro 30" X-Wing Toy - Impressions

Short version:
Fuselage rocks; everything else sucks...

Long version:
First, the biggest issue - the wings closed. I think we'll all need to accept that this may be the ulitmate CLOSED-WING X-Wing we have. Doing this as an open winged version would require a TON of work. Boat loads. And I'm not even too sure if it could even work.

But in general...

The wings are hollow so the underside will will need to be filled. If the plastic is warped (as mine is) you may need to JB Weld in some strip metal to hold the wing straight. Then the hollow wings have to be closed up with styrene sheet.

Guns are useless. Completley new cannons with brass tubing will be necessary. The main tube that sits on the wing can be used, but will take some engineering to get the brass tubing to rest inside nice and straight, and paralell with the others.

Engines are also 1/2 to 3/4 complete in circumference and are hollow. The shell/tube of the engine will need to be completed all the way around.

No cockpit at all, so if you cut out the canopy windows, you'll have an empty fueslage, unless you build your own cockpit tub (or add back in clear styrene, perhaps tinted.

Engine intakes and exhaust nozzles are snap-on separate parts, already installed at the factory, FWIW.

Once the wings and guns are snapped in place (by you) they are a bitch to undo. FYI.

Fuselage is really good. Porportions look pretty spot-on, and droid strip detail is really good for what this is. Butt cap is a bit squashed top to bottom, but detail is good.

Oh, and it is impressively large (I've heard that before). Pictures and videos aside, when you have this thing in person, it is BIG.

I knew it wouldn't be long before you grabbed one. Now, you need to update your side by side fuselage comparison shot!

I think I have a copy I saved at home, I'm at work right now. Give me a couple hours and I'll repost for you.

Found it! Just to clarify this does NOT have the new big on in it.

OK guys, here's an updated shot of most of the available kits:

Some people seem concerned about the thickness of the plastic. I wouldn't worry. It looks to be about 1mm thick and it's pretty sturdy.

Yeah - some have butt caps and some don't so it gets tough...

A tip...

Those with true studio scale X's still in a box...? DON'T go messing around with this because once you do even your Maxi-Brute or your Salzo will feel PUNY!

I'm hoping we get both this and the MF here in Australia as well as I am very curious to see the quality, even just their size. The MF isn't due for release until November so I expect it won't be until next year till we see it.

What's the deal on this as far as displaying it? I'm assuming it does not come with landing gear, no? I am thinking of getting one if only to mount it straight up on a wall somewhere. I really like the big stuff, however when it comes to displaying stuff I usually like to keep things that are of the same scale together--meaning I would never put an action figure next to a 12" figure, etc. But that's just me, I'm kinda anal about things like that. So I really don't know where this would go at my house since there is nothing else in this scale. It would have to be by itself somewhere.

But I can't stand it--I just gotta have this, even though it is by no means perfect. But I feel a little work and a good paint job could class it up some.

But again, how would be the best way to get this displayed?

Now that I got one of these and have been gawking at it for a day and a half, I think I might buy a second one to harvest for "half-cylinders" to complete the engines and the canons.

That's gotta be the simplest way to fix this thing's shortcomings. Also, I'm probably going to scratchbuild a new aft cap, as the details are just too shallow. It's funny, I'd probably be okay with having the details just wrong, IF they had depth, but it's the depth that really gets to me...

As for display, I'm probably gonna hang it from the ceiling with fishing line in the corner of my living room. Posing it at a rakish angle whre it's flying down could look pretty cool. This thing is light enough that I'm sure it wold be too heavy for that sorta thing.

Can you elaborate on this a bit more? What do you mean by completing the engines? Are they not complete?

Well, after much self debate I finally clicked on "buy with one click"....Hope I am not disappointed.

As you can see, the bottom halves of the thrusters and the cannons are not fully round. This is what I want a second toy for. I figure I'll build the cannon barrels from brass tube. The rest of fixes should be simple enough.

Laspector, there is a front landing skid only. Ass end sits on it's - well - ass...

Agree with hanging. Not a huge fan of doing that (no longer a teenager), but consider it like the old Planet Hollywood displays.

Alex, good idea on buying a second for parts.
