My Y-wing Build (Complete 9/2/2012)

I am a card/paper modeler and I used to build a lot of scale models but kinda got distracted with 1:1 scale props for a while. I always wanted to scratch build a Y-wing because of all the little greebles and details and decided my skills had progressed where I should be able to do a decent job of it. I found a 2D blueprint online that I thought would help with the basic shape and scale but I have had to fine tune and correct it alot so far. I am all but finished with the "head" of the ship and the only thing I am unhappy with is I ended up putting the torpedo launchers a little too far forward

You can see in the pics below I am starting with the basic shape and then layering on detail from there. The cockpit was pretty tough since alot of the detail was between 1-3mm at most.

Not bad for cardboard, would be nice in styrene that way you could sand the edges up nice and scribe panel lines in it.

Tried using styrene before and did not care for it. I oddly find paper to be more fun to work with and you would be surprised how well you can clean up the edges. I attached a few examples of scale models I have done in the past to show some examples.

What I would suggest, instead of using those horrible blueprints, is to find top, bottom and side profiles of the studio scale model and use that or make your own blueprints from that.

I'm glad to see a fellow paper modeler in here. Good luck with your Y-wing. I wanted to make one too, but I'm still at blueprinting phase. To call these a proper blueprint may be a bit far too fetched, but hopefully they'll help.

I normally do blueprint myself but when I found those online I thought I had lucked out. That teaches me to take shortcuts. Yours are actually really good and I wish I had them a few days ago when I was framing the fuselage. The basic shape is the real hard part. The greebling pretty much has to be done by hand.

So far I have been just using the blueprints I have and drawing on the changes using references photos. I got the basic shape for the fuselage now so really the only thing left will be the engines which are pretty simple. here are some updates on where I am at with the detailing. I include a shot next to a mechanical pencil to show how small some of the cuts are.

Managed to get a good deal done this weekend. I was able to add all the greebles to the top and almost finished the bottom. I decided to use small bits of wire for all the rods running along the model. I seriously underestimated how much time it is going to take to add all the little greebles. However, It will be worth it when its done.

Got a good amount done this weekend. I finished the wings and finished most of the engines. I tried to make the domes on the engines completly from paper but just did not like how they looked so I finally decided to use some sculpty so that I could sand it smooth. I am not happy with the little greeble that extends to the domes. the wires bend wierd and make the engines look like they slope. Plus they are far from close to accurate. I am planning on rebuilding those tonight. Hopfefully in the next day or so I will be able to show the completed build and then I can move on to paint.

Finished the engines last night so here is the completed build. It was quite rewarding to finally see it all assembled. Now on to paint.

Managed to get the base coat laid down last night and started detailing the cockpit and R5 unit.

Small update today. I finished the first round of weathering and now I can go back to detailing. Basically I washed the model with watered down black paint. This leaves the model really dark so I dry brushed the model with the base coat to reclaim some of the orignial color. Last I dry brushed on a bone color to bring the fuselage color closer to the head color. Some progress shots are posted below. I also started painting the tubes but the color I have was too brown so I need to pick up something a little more redish.

Spent a late last night, getting the model finished and I am very happy with the final result. I also quickly put together a basic stand for it out of some foamcore and a dowel rod. I attached a few pictures but you can see all 18 of the photos on my blog here:
