    Feb 23, 2011 - My HASBRO A-Wing thread #1

    G'day all
I have been inspired by a few members here who have modified some Hasbro toys in the past so I've decided to start my own thread about modifying my A-Wing. I'm tempting fate with this because I have a bad habit of leaving things unfinished and it is for this reason my wife does not allow me to buy any more models (my first wife was the same and it is plainly obvious they don't understand this hobby).

Anyway, I've started to remove the thick rivets and, using a pinvice, made new ones. The landing gear has been taken out and the holes plugged. The canopy hinge mechanism has also been removed and those holes filled as well.

I've started to detail the engine ring at the rear but getting the even placement of the styrene strips is still to be sorted.

The other main area of modification is of course the cockpit and I'll try to get this looking as close to the filming miniature as my limited skills will allow.

It will be slow going due to work commitments but will try and update when possible.

I've just completed detailing the rear engine rings.

I counted 24 individual strips per engine on the filming miniatures (hopefully, I counted correctly) and I wasn't sure how I could get an even placement between them. I settled on making a paper template with lines marked at every 15 degrees and...viola.

Nice love the A-wing another classic ship. Just wondering is there a difference between the Hasbro A-wing and the classic Kenner droids model? They probably used the same molds if I had to guess.

I'm not sure about that but I wouldn't be surprised if it is the same. The A-Wing seems to be one they haven't updated yet.

Thanks 3d-builder. So far, so good. I've still got rivets to remove as well as smoothing out the landing gear covers. Not sure whether I want to attempt to re-scribe the panel lines or just draw them in.

Enjoying your mod, Junk Pilot! Remember to go slowly and savor the fun of doing the conversion. I'm sure the harder areas will give you fun memories of how you suffered, saying "Never again!" but will give you the greater sense of accomplishment and embolden you to try out new tricks from which we will all learn. Oh, and don't be afraid to share everything - mistakes and all - we learn as much from what's been tried and failed.

lookin good, really like the details you added to the engine rings. as for the panels lines, honestly, I think they look more realistic drawn on..or if you do like recessed lines, make them very thin. just look at modern aircraft, you can barely see the panel lines. Id imagine on a spacecraft theyd be even tighter.

Looks great so far! The A-Wing is not a favorite ship of mine, but when I saw this ship it really motivates me to make one too. Starship Modeler - Star Wars A-WIng

Cool with another conversion thread! I really like the paintjob on the a-wing.

How would you rate this in accuracy? Looks nice.

It's been a hectic few weeks at home which has stopped me from doing any work but I've finally got to do some work again.

Nazgul, I'm not too familiar with the accuracy between the filming miniature and the Hasbro toy. I do know the guns are one of the most inaccurate parts on the Hasbro toy as well as the canopy cross member is too far forward. Also the rear bulkhead betwen the engines is very inaccurate too.

I've started to remove the raised panel lines on the fins as well as making a start on new replacement guns. It's only basic at the moment but with refinement should look much better.

Also, does anyone know what kit this is from (see pic)?

Trust me. After 30 years of modelling I'm still learning.

Thanks 3d-builder. They're only basic at the moment but hoping to spruce them up in the next week or so.

Has anybody made a resin cast of the new cockpit from the A-Wing from Hasbro's Legacy Collection yet? I would love one if there is.

Sorry to all for no recent updates on this thread though.
