Re: 1:1 Nothosaurus model.
Looking great! How are you planning on finishing it - glass? Are you going to tackle realistic skin and scales?

Re: 1:1 Nothosaurus model.
Thanks again, guys
![]() @NAZGŰL - Well I sort of came on the wrong track some while back so am living with some other people until I find some other opportunity. Haha, that was just to mark where the teeth area ends and the fleshy part begins, but yeah maybe I can name it Flesh ![]() @Nwerke - Yes I am going to use fiberglass on it, then I will try to make some realistic skin and wrinkles by using a skin texture stamp on the bondo while it is still curing. Though that skin part is still in the planning stage. |

Re: 1:1 Nothosaurus model.
Great job. have you tried contacting any paleontologists? If you find one who is an expert in sea reptiles or an expert in the time period your beastie lived in, send him an email explaining your project. Ask specific questions and then ask if he'd have time to have a phone convo. In my experience, professors love to talk about their work. Also, if you promise to send him a scaled down version or a model of his choice for his efforts, he'd probably fly over to help. Bribery will get you everywhere. (private university profs. are usually less busy btw.

Great job. What did you use to glue the foam together?

Re: 1:1 Nothosaurus model.
Thanks, guys.
Well I wouldn't know where to look for a paleontologist here, so I haven't talked to one yet. I think there is one guy bound to these museums that knows about dinosaurs, but I think I know more about this one now than he does anyway. I used an expanding foam as the glue since this sets really fast and can also be used as a filler on various areas, plus it can be cut and sanded to shape like the Styrofoam can. Seems so far almost all other glues will eat up the Styrofoam, except for the slow drying crappy wood glue. |

Re: Museum exhibit - 1:1 Nothosaurus - WIP
Now I hear all I would get for wasting my whole last summer on this project is $350 bucks, that's even less than what I had to pay for all the crap I built it from, and I've spent damn long on calculating sizes and studying dinosaurs too for this damn project.
I'm so damn tired of that museum and will take back all my stuff from there soon. All my tools and paint and pretty much everything was kept at that damn place so I could waste my time down there on some underpaid project when I actually had hundreds of other things I could have done instead. I feel like I should not finish this dinosaur and take the rest of the Styrofoam and fiberglass for my own projects that I left aside for this damn project, then those talentless basterds can build it themselves. What you all think such a thing is worth? It's nearly 5 meters long and would be covered in fiberglass and bondo to look as real as I could with the tools at hand. Someone once told me I should get at least $3500 for this, but I don't know. $350 for this is just crap. |

Re: Museum exhibit - 1:1 Nothosaurus - WIP
Man, that stinks. You should finish it though, just for the coolness of the project. Heck, you could list it in the JY and get a lot more that $350.

Re: Museum exhibit - 1:1 Nothosaurus - WIP
You should go ahead and finish it..I'm sure it's worth more, just hard to say how much really til I see it done, I've looked at a LOT of prehistoric creature replicas and their pricing though..and considering the size at the least it should more than what they are offering. I prefer to set up a price beforehand even having a contract if need be and that means half up front or at least they cover all materials. Too many artists get screwed over including myself. Look at it as a learning experience..in the way to deal with clients, technique for the project and in research...any time spent learning something isn't really wasted bud.

Starting a project without finalizing the details sounds like good business sense to me!

... right! ![]() Sorry, but that´s too true. Them offering you 350 $ for all this is a joke. We have had a few threads where people asked for advice on how much they should charge for work. In your case I´d say you should at least charge 25 US-$ (you are a novice at this) per hour plus taxes plus materials. So, for 350 US-$ you could work 14 hours, i.e. 1.5 days. And it sounds like you poured much more time into this. If you don´t have a contract, then cap the project and move on, especially if you don´t have any other connections to the museum, i.e. personal ones, friends, risk of being badmouthed in small town etc. |

Holy crap, that looks great! I'd love to see more pics of the final piece as well as any WIP in between the foam pics and the final!

Re: Museum exhibit - 1:1 Nothosaurus - WIP
@SmilingOtter - Haha, nice, that was actually something I was hoping for, to scare the crap out of kids with it, I like scaring people :P
@BlindSquirrel - Actually that's not mine, only a photo of what they used to look like, at least according to whoever made that, but I'll be trying to get the one here looking like that, so far it's just a 5 meter long blue foam dinosaur, probably Barney's cousin... |

Haha, nice, then you can buy it from me later when it's finished if you supply the 6x4 meter cardboard box to ship it in
