Melting Chavant Clay.
Can anybody tell me how to melt Chavant clay? What to put it in, what heat to use (oven/microwave) etc.
Will it be pourable, or just spreadable, like melted chocolate? thanks RV |

Re: Melting Chavant Clay.
From what i understand you melt it like you would chocolate, so chop it up, and put it in a bowl. Then put the bowl over a pan of boiling water, the heat from the water should melt the clay/chocolate.
Not tried it myself...but thats what ive read. Need to do it myself, just not got round to it. I think its pourable to....i'm hoping it is anyway! |

Re: Melting Chavant Clay.
Doesn't Chavant Clay have a sulphur content that prohibits curing of certain silicone molds?
What molding compound are you going to use? |

Re: Melting Chavant Clay.
Thanks for your help, i'm gonna try melting it over water.
What i'm trying to do, is get it soft enough to spread over an armature. I can't see any other way of doing it, the stuff is just so hard to use! thanks again RV |

Re: Melting Chavant Clay.
someone had a thread on here earlier that used a hammer (friction method) to "soften" the clay to apply to an armature or base.

I melt my sculpting casting wax in a double candy boiler. Try that. You put food in the microwave. Google-Fu "Double Boiler" on the net. I bought mine from the Made For TV store at my local mall. |

Re: Melting Chavant Clay.
My first time melting it was today. I first tried to melt it in an oven set to 200 degrees, it got soft but not pourable. The oven I used only went as high as 200, that's when I put it on a hot plate. I put it into a glass bowl and put it on an electric hot plate. Cranked up the heat and it all melted into a creamy pourable consistency. I poured it into a silicone mold and will demold it on Monday when I go back into work.
