I've never actually done the photoetch. I drew the artwork for the Richie and Steve's Alien Environmental Suit helmet detailing, but I think they used a different method to create it.

Re: Mad Mike's Studio City Nostromo!

Suggestion! You don't necessarily need to provide a sheet of PE with each kit. It WOULD increase cost a good deal. A better method would be to run off some reasonably accurate-looking PE and apply to your master, then remould that.

Pressure-cast it and you have a quantum improvement in the appearance of the model. Which isn't BAD or anything by any means, but could really benefit from this approach. Zero total increase in cost barring the cost of a new mould, which is coming up some time anyway.

Cheers,
Martyn

Thanks. I've got a better one yet though: get permission from that Aussie guy who did the excellent CG model to output his files by SL or 3d printing. Could be bigger again than the kit, and be output for hollow construction from the outset.

edit for punctuation

The excellent CG model isn't really accurate though, is it?

What model IS? Were the Halcyon or US kits mastered directly from measurements of the 12-footer or the 4-footer? I don't think they were but would love to hear otherwise.

There's another very good CG model by a US guy too - I was going to post some of the ref pics from the Meshes thread last night, but went to bed instead. He has a couple of the scale landing leg being filmed (the one that crushes the rocks). Nice pics I haven't seen before, go have a look. It's a superb good model but I think I can spot some slight contour problems.

Still, the beauty of a mesh is that it isn't hard to change it...

But seriously, a good etch brass upgrade for this kit's master would really be an amazing sight and plenty good enough. Etch can be dimensional these days so you could have raised ridges and plates on the pieces that do. And grilles etc etc. I'd LOVE to see that. I'm not really in the market as-is, but something like that would probably be a deal-maker for me.

Cheers,
Martyn

I could etch the hull more I guess, The grilles and everything are already detailed and I dont think etch could detail it anymore, It has the grills molded in there. The hull could be etched though, It would kind of take away the fun of detailing it up, but I could remold the hull. I would need to find some more 3rd generation bottom hull shots, cos the the majority of the shots are 2nd generation before they added mega-detail, the bottom rear engines, and the front thruster pod. On screen shots where it is landing, the detail can be seen, but parts are obscured by the clouds and blowing ice on the good shots...

There are some reasonable underside views in the Alien Photonovel, IIRC, are they enough to go on?

Here's the best I could do with cleaning up screengrabs... it's pretty murky under there.

Dayum!.... that is good...very murky, but good.. I dont know how else we can get any better actually. I know some guys are restoring the real Nostromo model, I have pics in my reference book I ship with the kits, but who these people are I dont have a clue...
