    Aug 19, 2012 - Looking for a Studioscale Y-Wing #1

    Hi All!

I'm a hobbyist photographer and I like to shoot miniatures (Lego/scalemodels), I really like the spacecrafts of Star Wars, especially the Y-Wing fighter. I have photographed it before, but only the Finemolds' 1/72 scale model I built (currently working on the 1/72 Millennium Falcon with custom led lighting, optic wiring and photoetch parts). What I'd like to build for photography someday is a studioscale version of the Y-Wing, the big Y with all the goodies added! I missed the Red Jammer sale by a few days last December, and it has been eating me ever since. There are rumors of another model coming up for sale: The Gold Leader. Although I have been trying to monitor the buzz around it, I cannot seem to find anything specific and I fear I may miss the opportunity again.

I am posting my message here, in the general modeling forum, because I am not yet certain if I would build the model to a represent any existing screen used model. I may use the same approach as I did with the 1/72 model, which was painted as a Gold Sq fighter, but not a specific one.

So, if any of you can show me where to look, where I can start my watch, I'd appreciate it immensely.

    Thanks,
    Vesa

Ps. Here's a photo of the 1/72 Y-Wing, I hope it gives you an idea of what I'm going for – only bigger.

Thanks! There are a just a few more pictures in a set on my Flickr stream. I'm still sort of examining the possibilities of this kind of miniature photography, and I'd love to shoot something way bigger than 1/72 (although the Falcon is looking promising at this point, too). A studioscale Y-Wing is just perfect, because in that scale you can really fake the size even in a blown up photograph. I'd love to explore that.

It'll be for display, too, of course. :D

WOW! Vesa, those are some amazing forced perspectives. I love the shot in the trees. If I hadn't read the description, I would swear someone built a full size mock up & parked it in the forest. Was there any photoshop work on the forest pic? After years of digital imaging work, that stuff is usually pretty easy for me to spot, but your pics are friggin' SEAMLESS!
There are a lot of skills that get shown off on this site, but very few builders that are skilled photographers. Please build more & shoot more!
Absolutely beautiful work on the model & the shots!

    Thanks again guys!

The Y-Wing with all the greeblies just blends naturally to the background, I guess it's just busy enough to look convincing. I can only imagine the possibilities with a studioscale model...

I guess I just have to keep busy browsing around, I'd hate to miss it again.

There is indeed photoshopping involved, it is a composition of two images with some extra tinkering done with the landing gear areas to blend them with the grass.

You know, I had the Sideshow Iggy on my browser with my finger on a key ready hit "submit order", but I never ordered it, I just had to draw a line to what I'm buying for photography. It was a tough decision. IG-88 would be great to photograph, though.
