    Jul 18, 2012 - Korben Dallas Taxi #1

Hey guys, just got this item from ebay, it's the first time I'm going to do a resin kit like this, It's in modest shape, the back part is the one that's going to give me more work, I cleaned it and sanded it a bit already. Right now I'm filling the holes with some epoxy . I would like to add some texture on the lights in the front and the back, do you guys have any suggestions for that? Should I put like foil paper in there or just use regular paint?

    Thanks!
    Sal

I have one of these! Though I think my casting is a bit better off than yours.
Did you get the two boosters for the back?

Oh yeah, I forgot to take a pic of those!!! But you know what really sucks are the decals, they look like they where printed in 1999 lol.... I might ask for a new one or just repaint it with some markers... did you finish yours already? I don't know what to use as the base.

Decals? Hmmm...I never got decals with mine.
Nope, haven't put it together yet but have thought long and hard about way's to improve it like adding lights and a "Taxi" sign for the top.
My thought on the black and silver checkered trim was to use a piece of adhesive foil from the local hobby shop and simply mask and paint the black square's in place. Probably not as easy as it sounds but...
Also, I've had really good luck with using automotive grade paints. With a good zinc based primer the colors really pop and the finish is superb.

hmmm great advice man! Thanks. Adding the taxi sign would rock!!!! Will see about that.
I want to rust it out a bit too! We'll see how it ends up looking, its my first kit, I want to practice with this and then move on to the blaster
Any ideas on what to use as the base/ stand? I would like to display it as if it was hovering

    Glad to be helpful!
It would be cool to do the "shot full of holes" taxi but I'd have to take a cast off of the one I have and pour up an extra cuz...adding all those bullet holes would certainly take it's tole.
For the Taxi sign to light up I was considering using a clear piece of strut, hollowing it out for an LED and then masking and painting it.
Yeah, hovering is kinda a MUST with this kit!
I'm thinking a couple of acrylic rods directly out of the side facing away and angling the taxi in such a way as to make it even more difficult to see them...like Korben is banking the cab in that direction.
You could use a couple of High Rise looking panels (Seemed mirror pieces?) for the "base" which could be attached to a wall to improve the hover/flying look.

Maybe something like this would work as a stand....

Let me guess......koolmodels? I made the mistake of buying from them at Wonderfest several years ago, without checking the kits.

Mine was in about the same shape as yours, so I used an automotive grade glazing putty (activated putty called dolphin glaze, made by upol). It took awhile to finish! Be sure to let it soak in warm soapy water, before you do anything! Mine had some spots where the resin was just not cured.

My decals were in horrible shape. Looked like they ran out of ink! So I made a new set. Then I bought some decal paper from Hobby Lobby, printed up ( I scaned the set they provided, and made the colors more solid. I aslo made extra sets of the checkerboard pattern's, and longer. ) I had to remake my set of decals, because they would not return my emails. That and figured it was not going to be any better!

For the front grill I used a small piece of brass tubing ( hobby store stuff ) at the bottom center of the grill. But I had to fix the ribs in the grill. I just used putty, cut, and sanded mine. But you could get some plastic pieces to replace what is supposed to be there. On the back bumber, I just filled in the rectangles that are lights. Then sanded smooth, and painted the lights on there.

That pretty much covers the big problems!

No, I never got around to taking any pics, because I have not made a base for it yet. So I just set it aside. I was ( and will!) Finish making a base that would contain copper pipes, and other weathered greeblies, to look like it is flying in the city.

If I get a chance I will dig it out and post some pics Saturday.

I have Skygunbro in the works to sculpt this and the police car. They will be closer to studio scale. Look for it. Plus I commissioned him to sculpt the Mangalore. Just do a search here and you will find it. Good luck.

I think i found the mangalore, but could not find the taxi and police car! I would love to have one in 1:6 scale!
Oh , and jasonw2112, don't forget to post your pic! Today I had fun working with my rotor tool and filling in the holes in the rear bumper with some epoxy. I don't want it to look perfect since I'm going with the weathered look, and some rusts and bumps as if Korben was a terrible driver... which I think he was since he had so many points taken from his license....
I also primed it in one side , using a gray primer... will post pics as soon as I'm done !

Hello. Been stalking for months since i am TRYING to get my Blade Runner Stop Motion Animated film done, and dont want to be distracted by my OTHER favorite movie. BUT if someone IS making this car in 1/6 scale or doing the blueprints, i would be willing to barter my self made line drawings of the grounded spinner from blade runner in 1/6 scale. I am on facebook at Bobovich Productions!

That would be an awesome vehicle in 1:6 , the taxi . Also the spinner , please let us know when you attempt to build it! I Think this taxi should not be so hard to build in 1:6 scale.

Ok, so I primed it today and its looking good, ready for the yellow and silver paint... any advice on how to paint both sides and not messing each color?

I can't see the front, but you may want to run a needle file over the engine grille since it looks rather rough and jagged.

As for paint, what I would do is just spray a nice flat silver for the bottom and chrome yellow for the top side. Chrome yellow looks like the right shade for taxi's.

For masking you really can't beat Tamiya tape for this sort of thing...

I think if it were me I would spray the yellow first, do a black primer base coat for the bottom, rub it a bit and then spray flat silver over. Black base coats give metallic finishes more depth.

Ok so i gave it a go, used the chromed yellow paint form Tamiya, looks awesome, but I don't know if the weather was too humid or if I spray painted it too close or if those are bobbles from the resin, but I got these in certain areas, I'm wondering if I have to sand this and give it another coat.... Any advice? Thanks a lot guys btw.... I'm loving where this is going

Oh god, those bubbles are bad. The kit looks pretty damn rough there.

I would sand them out, fill them all with super glue and do a bondo coat after, sand that...and then scribe all of the lines out, sand and primer.

That kit needs a fair bit of work before it's ready for paint...

The bubbles could be an indication of a chemical reaction with something contaminating the surface like chemicals leeching out of the resin, but that huge "run" on the top of the left rear fender (and possibly the bubbles) was caused by spraying too much paint at one time.

If it were my project, I'd strip the paint, thoroughly clean the surface again, then reprimer and repaint. A word of advice--whether you're priming or painting, never try to get complete coverage in one shot. Multiple light coats is the key. Hold the can about 8" to 12" from the surface you're painting, and build the paint up slowly with multiple coats, and let the paint dry thoroughly between coats until you get the coverage you want. Don't worry if you miss a spot, just cover it with the next coat. And never, ever, ever hold the can in one spot; always keep it moving. It can be time consuming, but it's still better than having to strip your project and start over.

Another tip, assuming you're using rattle cans--warm them up first. I place mine in a plastic bag (to prevent rust), then soak them in a bucket of hot tap water for 10-15 minutes, take them out of the water and shake them for 30-60 seconds to thoroughly mix the paint, then spray. The heat makes the paint slightly less viscous, so it comes out of the can easier and lays down on the surface of your project smoother.

If you're using an airbrush, I've never owned one so I can't help you there. But I have been building models using rattle cans for over 40 years, so I've picked up a few tricks along the way.

Oh man thanks a lot. I'm sure it was my fault because I remember putting the can too close (I don't have an airbrush) and I tried to paint it all at once...

So I will sand that part out and re prime and re paint.

    Thanks!

Yeah on a second inspection those sort of look like fish eyes. Meaning the surface is contaminated, be sure to give it a good wash.
