Duel Truck

...Thank you Zombie for explaining the J-B Weld. One of the things I love about this forum is there’s always something new to learn about. I’ve learned two things from your post. 1, the “steel” J-B Weld can fix a hole in an oil pan and 2, you have a ’74 Torino...
Had a '74 Ford Torino; that was back in 1981. I bought it used; blue interior, blue exterior, and the engine had a burned valve. I bought it with the intention of turning it into a "Starskymobile", but it slowly deteriorated during the 9 months I owned it. Little things mostly, but it soon became clear that it would require far more money than i was interested in spending just to keep it running, and I wound up selling it to a local used car dealer for $300. Not the best car I've owned, but not the worst either. :lol

Thanks for the feedback guys and all the cool info! If you want to see the movie for free, here’s a link. Duel (1971) Steven Spielberg Dennis Weaver, Jacqueline Scott and Eddie Firestone FULL MOVIE - YouTube

And thank you for the links, Mado. From what I’ve been able to find out is that the surviving truck from duel is a 1960 Peterbilt 281. It was a spare truck that never actually made it on screen. The original truck was a 1955 Peterbilt 281 and that’s the one that went over the cliff. Then there was the 1964 Peterbilt 351 that was used on additional scenes for the theatrical version of the movie. The surviving truck does have some minor differences compared to the original (like the bumper and side mirrors) but it’s still a good resource for some of the other tractor details and dimensions. The surviving truck was used in an episode of The Incredible Hulk. That episode also had some scenes from Duel which reportedly made Steven Spielberg furious.

Another note, Duel was written by Richard Matheson who wrote I Am Legend, The Shrinking Man and a few other books that became movies. He also wrote a couple of Twilight Zone episodes including Nightmare at 20,000 Feet which was directed by Richard Donner and featured some guy named William Shatner. :confused

Randy-san, May I ask,
When I scratch built the combat vehicle last time, I had a difficulty with finding some extra wheels and tires. Your Duel truck may need some extra wheels for the trailer. Can you obtain at the shop or do you build with scratch?

Thank you very much Skysoldier46 for this info. That's very kind of you to pass this along. When I get to that point I will have to contact Josh.

It doesn't seem like I've done much because I spend so much time just double checking measurements etc. I've removed the base of the sleeper cab.

Then I worked on the roof drop. I puttied, sanded, puttied some more and sanded some more then hit it with some flat black. There are some tiny rough spots but a little more putty and sanding should fix it.

Then a test fit with the doors and a look at the cab with the kit hood.

That's it for now. My wife is waiting for me to finish so we can watch The Walking Dead.

Katsu-san, I’m sorry I missed your post. I was looking through this thread and didn’t see this the first time. :behave I don’t want you to think I was ignoring you.

I have another truck kit that I was saving for donor parts and I will be using those tires on the trailer. I will buy more accurate resin wheels since it would be too hard for me to scratch build them. I will also be using the suspension from the donor truck kit on the trailer as well. At least that’s the plan for right now.

I have more pictures to post soon.

Thank you Ray. Love what you're doing with the Eagle and Y-Wing build. Hope you're getting well.

I did some work front grille. This is the one that comes in the kit.

I first cut off the headlight fixtures and then cut off the sides of the grille using a regular Xacto blade and straight edge. I did several slow and steady light passes of the blade first to make a groove then started adding more pressure until the cut was complete.

Then I started dipping this into regular household bleach to remove the chrome.

After that, I took the center grille and cut off 3mm from both sides making it more narrow. Then I cut off the top section of the grille with the emblem on it and the bottom section. This now gave me a frame for the new grille I will be making. I also cut down the top hood ornament so a stub was left to match the Duel truck.

I also cut out a back piece to help hold the grille frame together. The back piece is 25 mm tall and 35 mm wide. The grille comes out to 44 mm high at the center and 36 mm wide.

Then it was time for the 17 grille vents. I first added a 1 mm styrene box inside the grille because the truck has something that looks like this. I used strips of 3 mm styrene cut 26 mm long for the vents. I glued these vent strips to another strip first because it was just easier for me to get them glued at an angle. I just used Plastruct Plastic Weld to glue these while holding the vents in place with tweezers.

Then after all 17 vents are in place, the final product...
