Re: BSG Agro Ship / Botanical Cruiser
I'v been busy making parts for the undersides of the domes. I'll have an update with pics in a few days. I promise.

Re: BSG Agro Ship / Botanical Cruiser
Some of the power connectors and LED's for the domes.
![]() My initial design for the attachment of the domes was simple enough. The entire dome assembly would just screw on like a light bulb all in one piece. ![]() Problems here... the angled domes are ending up too close together - some even touching. All the angled pedestals have to be torn apart and redesigned to fit properly. ![]() ![]() Closer examination of the studio CG model below shows that the angled domes jut out at a slightly steeper angle than the sloped sides of the ships body. Something I overlooked. ![]()

Re: BSG Agro Ship / Botanical Cruiser
I'v redesigned how the dome pillars attach to the model. This not only corrects the domes spacing problems but it also makes for a more mistake free method of attachment. While the initial method was nice and simple, there was a danger that someone might mistake the domes for being screwed on properly when in fact they may only be hanging from the power connecters.
This new method here calls for an alignment barrel to first be screwed on the model, then the dome pillar is slipped over it and secured by a small set screw. ![]() Now all the domes are properly spaced 1 inch apart. ![]() Front view compared with the studio CG model. ![]() ![]() The domes can now be attached easily and securely by anyone.

Re: BSG Agro Ship / Botanical Cruiser
laser cutting the parts for the truss-support detail under the domes.
I had made all these parts from basswood but decided they weren't strong enough so now they are of much stronger acrylic. ![]() the finished parts - acrylic for the sides and thin styrene for the delicate front parts. ![]() ...and installed ![]()

Re: BSG Agro Ship / Botanical Cruiser
This build just gets better and better.
This has gone beyond being a model and is more of a work of art. Can't wait to see this finished. Awesome job. |

Thanks guys.
The under side portion of the 15 domes are now complete. With a grand total of over 5400 individual pieces. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Now you're just showing off, which is okay, since you have stuff worth showing off.

Re: BSG Agro Ship / Botanical Cruiser
OMG !!!
![]() Is the part count of 5,400 pieces just for the domes, or the whole ship ?? You must have the eyes of a hawk, the hands of a surgeon and the patience of a saint. Looking forward more. |

Re: BSG Agro Ship / Botanical Cruiser
Fascianating project, building a real 3D model based on a CGI model. It is the perfect demonstration of the flaws of CGI models, I know this because I build CGI models for a living. My point is most evident in the details,it is nearly impossible for CGI modellers due to the time constrains to get the randomness and interesting shapes one would get building the old fashioned way using model kits for details. That said I am loving this project, look how much better the unfinished model pictures look compaired the CGI shots. When it's done with the paint and the weathering it will be glorious.

Re: BSG Agro Ship / Botanical Cruiser
Yeah, the details are something that's not as easy to do in CG, but the real advantage is the freedom of filming, where you aren't restricted in any way for the shots you want, and that if you wanted you could have as many copies of an object as you want, whether that's a whole ship or just a part.
