Another Revell Voyager build

OK, colours and bear in mind I'm sort of making this up in the name if experimentation. Basic hull colour is XF 19 darker panels on the hull are XF 53. Phaser strips are XF 19 WHICH is a buff colour. Thrusters are XF 64. I used the clear blue and red for the nacelles and Bussard collectors and that's about it for now. I have sprayed it today giving 3 coats, using a craft heating tool between coats to speed up the drying. I just have to tear down the masking now and hope there isn't any bleeding. I'm prepared for some brush painting touch up before I mask up some of the other areas. More pics once the masking comes off. Oh, all Tamiya paints by the way.

Well today had its good and bad moments as the pictures will show. Lessons learnt; you really do not need all of that masking as the airbrush can be pretty accurate, also remember to mask all the bits that need it as i had to redo some bits later on in the day but hey it's all good fun. Some of the detail that i wanted to do just will not get done this time around as i should have done it when they were at the Sub Assembly stage, i cant get in there now to do them. Anyway here some pics of how the day went!

First coats done in places.

Now lets get the masking off and see what happened!

We can see where some of the masking could have been a tad better too, ill try and clean that up later.

All that aside she isnt looking too bad, some more masking to do and the sensor strip details etc but i'm happy-ish with it for now, and after all that the lights still work too!

Those close ups also show just how poor some of the work is too, heres hoping it only ever gets seen from a foot or so away. :)

I have started to try and mask the impulse engines too but that really is not going to be easy, should have done them earlier, lesson learnt for next time Jim! Also learnt that if you are going to touch it up then re-mask and use the airbrush, do not try and brush paint over any errors as it just doesnt look the same!

It will certainly do for the grandsons bedroom ceiling if nothing else! I just know those decals are going to be a real pain, have you seen how many there are?

Your build is looking very strong. Overall nice work on the paint -I think you're being to critical of your work.

Look forward to seeing your next update.

Thanks for the nice comments guys, it is actually going a little better than i expected and i am deliberately leaving some of the mistakes rather than fix them as i knew this was always going to be a bit of an experiment. Due to work and stuff i probably wont be doing any more for a couple of weeks or so but that will give me the enthusiasm again, ive been with it all day today so need a break to re-invigorate myself. :)

Nice job on the paint, it's never gonna be perfect, but you got it pretty close. I thought the triangular detail things on the edge of the saucer were supposed to be orange though?

I've seen the thrusters in many different variations of colour so decided to go with this brown although to be fair it could probably do with being a bit lighter. Ive had problems with these today and may have to re-do them anyway so ill revisit the colour then. Thanks for the kind comments.

Well the painting is just about finished, some small detail left but nothing too exciting. I've given her one coat of future floor polish and that makes one hell of a difference. I need to drum up some enthusiasm for the decals now, i have been 'practicing' on a BSG viper that i am playing with too. Im not looking forward to the decals at all, some of them are tiny and will not be easy to get into place, im wondering of on the next build i should build her in subsections, paint and do the decals before final assembly. That may be a little difficult due to the lighting which is going to be more complicated next time around too. I also have to decide just how i am going to mount her so that i have somewhere for the switch and batteries but i have time to sort that out yet, i'm thinking of just making the current stand deeper so that the battery pack can sit under there, ill cut a space out for the switch, just have to see how it all goes. Well here she is as he stands now, ill post some more pics once i start those damn decals which will probably be Saturday Sometime. Then ill need a home for her and go buy it again and do it properly with all that i have learned during this build.

I'm really quite proud of her from a distance!

Thanks, it's been hard working learning all the new techniques, I had never even used an airbrush before this and she doesn't stand up to close scrutiny but I'm still pretty pleased with her and looking forward to my next build which i will also document. Next time i intend to have all of the nav lights, and flashing and ill probably dabble with Fibre optics to ensure those additional lights are not to large.

Well no pics today but I have started on the dreaded decals after practicing on the BSG Viper I had lying around. I'm not a decal fan but its the finishing touches and I want to do her justice. Once I have done a few more i'll post some pics and then all left to do really is sort out a base, fix a switch for the LEDs and then decide what to do with the finished article I suppose!

Must be about time to order another model and do it with all the techniques I have learned doing this girl.

OK, we started the decals today, quite difficult but not quite as bad as i thought it might be! I now have the whole top section done with only a couple of tears that i managed to repair, hopefully. Just needs a coat of future to seal them all and i can start on the side sections.

Also with the close ups you can see where I skimped on some of the sanding and cleaning up of the paint job, Im sure it will all look fine - from a distance!

What did you use to settle the decals down? Microsol?

Either way it looks great, certainly a model to be proud of. If I could make one suggestion, you might want to overspray a light dusting of black on the circuitry to tone down the bright primary colors and keep them more in scale.

I softened the decals in warm water and then dipped them into future before applying. Once I had the whole top done I applied another coat of future. I have yet to do a (very) little bit of weathering and will tone down the sensor panels then hopefully. I'm also going to use some pastel masks to highlight etc but not doing any of that until all of the decals are done so I can, hopefully, get a uniform finish. I'm also going to run a craft knife down some of those seams with a view to removing some of the excess paint in places. Then i just have to work out how I am going to mount the damn thing and the battery pack etc, I suppose I should have thought of that from the start really! :)
