AMT Slave One WIP

I like the vacuform idea. I haven't thought of that. I'm trying to avoid buying another kit just for the windshield and like you said, I'd still have to deal with those distortion issues. I'm going to give the vacuform some serious consideration. Thank you so much for that idea!

No problem... but I was thinking about this the other day... you may not have to build a whole vacuform table at all. You could probably get away with using some clay and pushing the broken windshield into it... then make sure the edges aren't covered by the clay... stick it to the end of rod and then stick it into a base. Take some cooking spray and spray it so that nothing will stick to the surface. Then take the clear plastic and hold it over a candle flame until the center starts to get droopy... and then quickly force the sheet down over the broken windshield. Hold there for a few minutes until it hardens completely. That should give a pretty good replicate. Always good to try new methods... really keeps your mind sharp! :)

Hi guys ...Hey Randy its nice to see this project has gone this far.. however sad to see the canopy glass destroyed. This has happened to me as well both with the Slave 1 ERTL and finemolds. However you can still replace the part ? Just like the above thread has mentioned.. ''vacuform it '' or you can grab a 2 liter coke bottle and make one by cutting out the curve round top of the bottle. You might need like 2 or 3 bottles till you get it close. However I personally prefer the vacuforming. Here are pics below to get you inspired again....

Dude... that is an excellent suggestion... never thought of that! :) That would probably work!

Sorry to see the canopy busted. I built a vac machine and it wasnt hard at all to do.

The FM slave has a really bad fit for it, but I hadnt built the vac machine yet. If I would build another, Id sure make my own canopy to get a better fit.

Loosing the original canopy is a good chance to have the better one.
I didn't want you to use that awful clear parts for your good detailed cockpit.

As they say, I recommend you to make it with vacuum forming or heat pressing with clear sheet plastic or PET coke bottle. PET bottle has a pretty thin and has a good clarity and it's able to get the form with rather low temperature.

You should make the plug with the broken canopy and do heat pressing.
Don't forget to put the grove on.

Thank you guys very much for the kind words. :thumbsup

I'm going to look at some coke bottles and consider using the broken canopy as a plug for heat pressing. I'm sure something will work out. I also have more pictures to upload but have been a little busy the last couple of nights.

Thanks again guys!

Hi, I'm not sure if this has been suggested already... but have you tried contacting the model company about getting a replacement part (canopy). Some companies (like AMT) will have a collection of their kits for these kind of unfortunate situations. Maybe shoot them an email?
Good Luck!

AMT was bought out about 10 years ago by a car kit company that basically had no interest in the sci-fi models at all. The only way to find another windshield is buying another of the kits on ebay.

Just an f.y.i. in case you don't already know, AMT (along with MPC and Polar Lights) is now owned by Round 2 Models, and has been for a few years. Unfortunately, that doesn't help Randy13 because thus far Round 2 has expressed no interest in re-releasing any of the AMT Star Wars kits.

Yeah that's it... I heard they were bought out and the company that bought them wasn't interested in re-establishing the lucas liceasing or something like that... That really sucks! I know Fine Molds has picked up and started making alot of new SW models but they are all coming from Japan and even thou the quality of the kits is outstanding, the cost of them due to shipping from Japan make them hard to get ahold of. I wanna get a few of them actually.

Started? Fine Molds has been producing Star Wars kits for over a decade now; their 1/72 scale X-Wing kit was first released in 2001. But, yeah, when you add the increased international shipping fees to the base price of their kits the total cost makes them less desirable (i.e. cost prohibitive) here in the U.S.. Still, if they ever produce a TIE Advanced x1 (a.k.a. Darth Vader's TIE Fighter) and/or a B-Wing kit, I'll do what I have to to get at least one of each.

Can ya tell I've been out of the scene for awhile? LOL I know Fine Molds has made some awesome kits, and their retooling of the X-Wing, Slave 1, Tie Interceptor, Y-Wing, Snowspeeder and Falcons are outstanding. Now I wish they would get some of the others out of the way that we grew up with. Like R2 and 3PO, Shuttle Tydiruim, B-Wing, A-Wing, AT-AT, AT-ST, Darth Vader's X-1 Tie, Speeder Bike, Star Destroyer (that could be a big one like the 1/72 Falcon), the Death Star, the list goes on... but what I'd really like to see them do is the ones that AMT never got to, like the Sand Crawler, Jabba's Sail Barge (w/Skiff), Landspeeder, Probe Droid, Some of the other robots (eg: R5-D4, 2-1B, etc), Tie Bomber, Medical Frigate, Mon Calamari Cruisers, Rebel Blockade Runner, Escape Pod, and that's just from the OT... then what about the other pod racers, or the trade federation command ships, Darth Mauls ship, The Landing craft, the Droid Transports, the speeder they used on corusant, the buzz droids, etc. There were so many new ships in the prequels they could be busy for decades more. But I digress... Would be nice to see alot of the ones we never got back in the day come to light. Who knows... maybe they have those in the works as we speak and just not saying anything.

I was beginning to wonder, but that's only part of the equation. The other part is that my main hobby is, and has been since the late 60s, building model kits. Props and such are definitely a secondary interest, and I often forget this is the Replica Prop Forum and not the Replica Modeling Forum, especially when I'm in the General Modeling section of the site. I apologize if my previous posts came across as "abrasive" in any way, as that was not my intention.

As for the "wish list" you posted I'd definitely be intrested in any and/or all of the kits you mentioned, but I already have far more model kits than I'll be able to build before I die so I have to be much more selective these days. That said, if anyone ever produced a Sand Crawler kit in styrene I'd be all over it like white on rice. :D

I know what you mean bro... between the Sandcrawler and the Sail Barge, I'd snatch them up ASAP! Don't worry about it... I realize you're just being you... and that's why we luvs ya! Just as long as you stay away from my brains we've got no probs! :)
