    May 13, 2012 - 3D printing of Atlas #1

    Hello all,

I just wanted to share a project I've been working on. It really surprised me when I learned that this has been circulating the gaming blogs but wanted to share it here.

Here's a picture of a 3D printing I made of Atlas. It was done in the basic nylon material Shapeways uses (they call it White, Strong and Flexible). I then sanded it by hand, painted the pieces, added some decals, assembled the parts and then finally wired up a very basic LED circuit in the eye and elbow to give Atlas a bit more life

I plan to finish this off with a portal base in the future once things have settled down (got a busy few months ahead of me unfortunatly).

If you're interested in reading a bit on how I went about making this, I've documented it over on my blog (psychobobarts.blogspot.co.uk or psychobob.co.uk. Direct link to the post is Psychobob Arts: 3D Print: Atlas (Portal) Part1). Now all I need to do is learn how to make this without 3D printing so it's cheaper!

This is pretty fantastic! 3D printing tech is really opening up new doors for model making. Well done!

Not bad! Is it a stationary model or does it have any articulation?

    Cheers!

@CB2001: Unfortunately not. When I was creating the 3D model file, I was originally concerned with the weight on the joints so I decided to keep them locked in one position to give them more strength. On hind sight that wouldn't have been an issue. I may try printing the next project with some articulation.
