38" SUPER STAR DESTROYER 'Executor'

Hi everyone. this was my first resin kit. A good size to kick off. i saw Lee Fury's lit one & had to have it. i was fortunate to find it on ebay. I was stoked. I had never done lighting before so had no idea what I was doing really. Over the last year being on the boards I have learnt all the skills from all the fantastic people I have been fortunate to meet. Attached are some of the build pictures from along my journey into resin kits with lighting. I am still new to this hobby/art & still have much to learn. I thank everyone for their guidance & support. i hope to have this model finished by July this year. I have only just learnt how to do LED lighting & Fibre Optics. Alot of resin had to be removed to allow for lighting of this model & alot of fibre will be used to light it. Unfortunately this one of the last kits cast & there are quite alot of pits, micro bubbles & bits the resin didn't get into on the buildings. These won't show up too much though can be seen in some of the beginning close ups. A great kit though & has been a challenging learning curb.
The full build can be viewed here

Every time I see this kit I wanna build it. As soon as I get some of my other projects out of the way I am definately going to give this a shot. Your progress is looking great!

Re: My first resin kit 38" Executor

Just say its a new dining table... ok so some more drilling & threading. Broke aboy 8 drill pieces today as when I hit thick spots the drill piece just gets bogged & snaps Got the LED's for the engines wired up & couldn't help but do a light test. Am way ahead of myself as I need to strip the primer as its flaking off. Some idiot didn't wash the pieces properly I will also need to install all the fibre optics before putting the lights in the engines. Its going to be quite busy inside this mother. Sorta get the idea of what will be. I thank & curse Lee Fury for doing this to me. Without wanting to do what he did this would not be happenning

Woow! that's A great build
Nice and precise detail !

May I ask, the last few photos in a first post, You taped some bunch
of optic fiber together after stick out through the halls. What is that for ?

It's going to be a really 'Heavy' model.

Cheers

Re: My first resin kit 38" Executor

Thanks everyone. This kit is offered here by this guy here be quick only a couple left.
http://www.therpf.com/f11/korbanth-38-super-star-destroyer-model-74809/
Theres a couple left so be quick. Its been remoulded & cast & is well worth the money. If you want to light it be ready for the work. The top picture of the fibre optic is where Ive threaded fibre optic through building pieces & secured it with tape as I have not yet glued/attached the fibre yet. Just checking whats best for that task.

Re: My first resin kit 38" Executor

Well its my first day off in 8years that I haven't one or two kids with me With my son now in Prep(first year). Theyre both at school. Sort of sad really but now I got one day to build, walk, go to the beach with the dogs or whatever So back to this time consuming fibre optic LED eating monster I started. Ive spent the morning (3hours) threading the last of my 500ft of fibre optic & just made it to the finish line on my 3rd piece. Yep 3rd piece! Theres 500ft of fo on 3 pieces. Guess I'll be placing an order. Lucky I gave up drinking So this is it my 3rd piece of threaded fo building with a quick light test to keep myself & everyone else amused & interested Still got plenty to thread & theyre just the add on sections..........

Re: 38" SUPER STAR DESTROYER 'Executor'

Thanks for posting this thread, I should be getting my 38" SSD tomorrow, so I will be following this one closely. I'm guessing you are using .25mm optic strands? Are you planning on using all the same size, or are you going to toss in a few different sizes to break it up a bit? How about color of the LEDs? I'm thinking about using a mix of white and "warm white" with maybe a few random blues and reds and yellows sparsely spread about.

Re: 38" SUPER STAR DESTROYER 'Executor'

Thanks. Yep 0.25mm fibre optic. You'll need atleast 2000ft of it also if you want to light this bad boy up well. Your lighting idea sound good. Im just going to stick with the blue but have a couple of red here & there. Its alot of work but am sure its going to be worth it once its done.

where do you get the drill bits from?

Re: 38" SUPER STAR DESTROYER 'Executor'

Hey rgjacket,

I received mine too! I got fiber and drill bits on ebay. Did not start it yet. Searching for a used press drill to help me out. The skinning-off part of the model is scarring me a little though.

Fellow Aussie,

The build is looking most excellent. Over 2000 feet of FO, I am impressed.

Will you have some update pics soon as the last were a fair while ago.

I live about 6 hrs from the Gold Coast so next time I head up that way, mind if I drop in for a look see at all of your work and maybe have a few brewski's ?

Cheers.

Dave.

Re: 38" SUPER STAR DESTROYER 'Executor'

has any one tryed useing Cold Cathode 12" Tubes to light the inside of this or any other model then use fiber optics to direct the light out?

ColdCath12 Blue 12 Cold Cathode - Fiber Optic Products, Inc.

Re: 38" SUPER STAR DESTROYER 'Executor'

yes, it looks fantastic....I really want to start on a 6ft sized SSD, but the logistics is proving more of a challenge than I expected, so maybe if I did something more like a 60 inch one
