1/700 & 1/350 scale BH Cygnus builds

What happened??
Well - I was IM'ing a board member - and accidentally posted it to the thread - Operator error. I did not think it through that people without the context of sitting in my seat would wonder WFT I was talking about = again - Operator error :D

The sad thing is - I wasn't even drinking at the time... I probably would have gotten it correct then. :cool:cheers

Sorry for the confusion.

OK finally back from my month long business trip... collecting my mail I found that my armature parts have arrived... Now I just need to divine how that jigsaw puzzle goes together. Once I figure that out I think I'll try to document it so others can follow easier. while I'm doing this I think I'll keep in mind how I might light this sucka :)

How on earth have I missed all of this thread ? Oh yeah I dropped off the planet for a couple of years.

Amazing work, I'm considering buying all the parts to make this instead of trying to get the MPC kit on eBay.

One thing...apparently the armature does not include the section for the NOSE yet--Dave is still working on that one. The nose and rear sections are bolted to the center section--should work fine since everything is such light weight.

HI any chance that the files for the Outboard Module, the outboard module connector and the Antenna could be re-uploaded? The files are corrupt on download and can't be extracted as the archives seem to be invalid

Cheers

Hey guys, just a really quick drive-by with a big heads-up - SHAPEWAYS IS ABOUT TO KILL THESE PROJECTS. At least, my 1/350 version, I can't speak for Dave. As of Tuesday priceing for WSF models changes. Some models decrease in price, but most large/low-density models are increasing in cost anywhere from 200% to 800%. Most of my parts that are currently in the $130 range are going to around $360 - $420. They gave notice of this on Wednesday this week. It's insane.

I'm going insane with rework and uploads right now, if anyone is mad enough to actually want more 1/350 bits then keep an eye on my shop - https://www.shapeways.com/shops/kremmen

- for the sake of safety while I'm still prototyping, I took everything down a while ago so nothing is public right now. I hope to get some of the most expensive parts worked up as best I can get them and posted before Tuesday. Pulling a lot of all-nighters, mainly for my own benefit as it is a really, really expensive model already and I don't expect any major interest from others.

It'll be completely out of reach after Tuesday though. I am assuming Dave's price increases will also be painful though probably not as bad. Le sigh!

PS Sorry about this. I don't put any markup on my parts and neither does Dave. This is entirely driven by Shapeways and a lot of the design community are up in arms about it, it's going to kill many people's small businesses. It's not nearly enough time but it seems they're treating the whole thing as an emergency, or they're just very very bad at PR.

PPS if you order anything it will be *totally at your own risk*. Having to try uploading new versions of everything trying to keep the costs down; Shapeways won't consider anything 'verified', even things I've printed before which are almost 100% unchanged. You'll be in the same boat I am; I'm going to be dropping a couple of grand on parts which may not be printable, or may print with errors. I can't help this, but SW are usually good about refunds or credit, so cross your fingers...

No problem. Here is how ugly it looks. Get a load of those "improved prices" (yes, they really tried to sell it as an improvement. Oh my god.)

SW prices 01.jpgSW prices 02.jpg

I'm about to place my first order, so I'll make that set of files public/for sale before I knock off for the night, with some warnings. A lot of SW users are going nuts right now. Even some of the staff have been saying they argued against this crazy deadline, but were overruled. Suicidally dumb move!

Edit: no go. Since I last printed anything via SW it seems they've changed their system. The only parts I can make available are ones I've printed myself previously; all the new stuff is off limits until I have trialed it first or something. Seriously pissed at these guys right now. There's some new "beta" thing I haven't got my head around yet, I'll look at it tomorrow. Probably involves a fee.

Can't tell if Dave's part prices have gone up by that much. But in any case I'm sure glad I already bought all the pieces.

I bet!

I guess I was unclear - people have till this coming Tuesday to order at the old prices. (You can't see what the new ones will be as a customer, only designers get that info, for now.)

I'm kinda tempted to go for Dave's pieces myself. The anxiety of not knowing if mine can even be printed is murder, lol.

Re: 1/700 & 1/350 scale BH Cygnus builds

Attn: Frankpr01 - thanks for buying the Palomino, but if you can I'd recommend cancelling and re-ordering in Frosted Ultra Detail. It does print in WSF (and is cheaper), but the small antennas won't come out well - mind you I haven't tried it in FUD yet myself so I can't say for sure it'll be a lot better, but the girders will have more detail.

Cheers,
Martyn

PS figured out what was up with not being able to list models for sale - it's mainly that the SW servers were being hammered. A lot easier to make changes right now while all you Northerners are asleep. :p

Re: 1/700 & 1/350 scale BH Cygnus builds

Thank for the advise Martyn...already submitted the cancel/re-order...This project is one of love and passion for me as it has been for you and Dave...my modeling is my hobby and entertainment. I am a huge fan of the movie, "bad" as it was by current standards, it had superb special effect for the time and one of the most iconic, gothic and beautiful ships the SF genre has ever given birth to...The USS Cygnus...What SW had done has blown away every penny from my entertainment budget/savings...I hope things will eventually become affordable as I had planed to build your model after you had made the pieces available when completed and proved...Alas, lets ride this wave and see if we make it to the shore...

Are SW serious, with that business model they'll be out of business in a year, I'll bet one of their competitors steps up to the plate now.

Yeah, it's nuts. I was up till 7AM this morning; will be going all night tonight I think, uploading is painfully slow - lots of others doing the same. Interesting thing - the new rules almost destroy scale modelling on SW. Models are disproportionately affected by the price algorithm, way worse than most other things.

Frankpr01 - sorry! I guess they don't like the model in FUD. I'd recommend waiting a bit longer, I will be doing a v.2 of the Palomino as soon as I can, optimised for the finer material. It's more expensive but worth it for a really small detailed piece. And FUD pricing isn't changing...yet. Given the shock over WSF I'm not going to mess about - will get the Palomino updated in the near future.

SW have lost any business seriousness...developers and customers alike will look to the other alternatives. With the competition so tough and technology advancing so quickly, they will regret this move...they had a faithful steady number of users who will do business now with someone else....

Martyn - Even if SW is now a big question mark, keep up your excellent work and keep us posted on your progress...you already know we will wait for you...I want to have the privilege of building a 1/350 and a 1/700 Cygnus... SW or no SW...and while I wait for your v2, I will go ahead with your Palomino in WSF...I will be so grateful to have the two versions...
