1/6 Scale - TARDIS from Doctor Who

I have been working on this project for YEARS. It is finally coming to life.

I am mastering this model in true 1/6 scale and it will be mostly wood construction. Some pieces will not be wood, like the handles , lock and the lamp. I have had the real piece used for the lamp on top of the Tennant era TARDIS made in 3D and I am considering having it grown but I haven't decided yet.

I have the base started already. I am going to be making the majority of the pieces of this kit with my laser cutter. I hope you enjoy this project as it takes shape.

The base is cut from 3mm baltic birch plywood. It is entirely over engineered but it is nice and strong. This is the first dry fitting of the base pieces and it wont be needing any glue I can assure you of that. It fits together perfectly.

Now for the first pics.

OK so my base worked out well but I wanted to make this kit modular so that the pieces go together really fast. So to that end I did a base redesign and added channels that the walls can slide down in. It should make assembly much easier, as well as, keeping things straight. So here are some pics of the new base, and one of the walls.

Re: 1/6 Scale - TARDIS from Doctor Who - UPDATE 1-14-14

I ordered a set of full size pull handles so I can make the scaled down versions. Should be here in a few weeks. Also, I am thinking of doing some photoetch for the grill that goes around the top lamp.

I am looking into a deluxe kit option that will use an Arduino board to control a few things.

Awesome weather here in Dallas today, 70 sunny and very light wind. Perfect for sanding, staining, painting etc.....

So I have been struggling with how I wanted to do the posts for the TARDIS.

Did I want to make a jig for my table saw so I could knock out posts when I needed? Not really.

Did I want to painstakingly get it set to make the exact perfect size posts? God no.

I couldn't decide what wood to use, the posts are so narrow and I am really attached to my fingers, so I got some advice from a woodworking guy in my companies engineering department and I decided to make my posts a very simple and easy way. Laser cut each side of the post from 3mm baltic birch. :)

I cut each side and then glue it all together. I narrowed the proportions so after I put them together and sand them, I can then take 1/16 birch strips and "skin" the posts so that they are perfectly sized and slide into the holes I made into the base. Here are some new pics.

Re: 1/6 Scale - TARDIS from Doctor Who - UPDATE 1-20-14

Shapeways print of the top Lamp should be in tomorrow I cannot wait

Re: 1/6 Scale - TARDIS from Doctor Who - UPDATE 1-20-14

Shapeways print arrived, and I could not be more pleased. Before someone jumps up saying that the lamp is not correct for the Tennant version, please note that I will be modifying the top. I decided to model the very tip of the top part on the Smith version so I can mold it, then modify it to be the Tennant version. The smith Tardis uses the top part of the Tennant Tardis so I will need that piece on both.

So I took the real deal and made it 1/6 scale

So I got the base skinned, very happy :)

Re: 1/6 Scale - TARDIS from Doctor Who - UPDATE 2-3-14

OK I am back to work on this after a long delay. I have redone almost every file tweaking them and I plan to have this done in the next month and start taking orders.

I had the correct handles shipped from the UK, created in 3D and then scaled down to 1/6. I had them made in plastic and brass from that printing company.

Next is the complete bases redesign. It is more simple, uses less material and ensures correct positioning of the posts.

Re: 1/6 Scale - TARDIS from Doctor Who - UPDATE 11-7-14

I have no clue how but one of Munson's pictures got added and I cannot remote it.

Re: 1/6 Scale - TARDIS from Doctor Who - UPDATE 11-7-14

Update. I went a different and more accurate direction with the windows. The molding is just a test as it is thicker than the wood I am testing against. I am waiting on the correct wood.

Call Box signs are coming along nicely. Laser cut clear acrylic that is spray painted black and then reverse etched to allow the signs to be able to be lit from behind.
