Beautiful work!! Can anyone tell me what one calls that stand the X-Wing is mounted on while working on the model?

Hi Lee,
Wow it is really coming along great
I am more than impressed with your work
I have to agree with Dave as well this is a very interesting build up thread.
Keep up the great work mate.
Cheers Chris
Lee, when you do your mud splatter effect, do you do it from the airbrush or from a toothbrush. I tried early on, on mine with the tooth brush, seem to get less control with the airbrush? Whats you take on all this?![]()
Chris thank you, im glad you like her so far buddy, wings are now ready to prime as ive been full of beans at the bench, sadly lol, what is it when you need to prime with an aerosol, the nation goes damp LOL.
Maybe tommorow! Im hopeful for a very early 08 completion!
Guy, the splatter is done with a toothbrush buddy, that and artist acrylics, but no blacks, there to stark!
Just put a blob on the brush, and then apply a bit of water to thin it some, from there play with how thin you want it, and how much spray you want, dial it in by running your thumb across the bristles on some kitchen towel, when your happy, flick it on the model lol.
The thicker the paint, the finer the spatter and less spread, thinner, its more washed out, like the lower end of the buttplate i did?
Just dont do it like Jack Nicholson in Batman, it wont work lol.
Practice on some cheap small parts buddy, its an effect when used sparingly and well, looks very cool to my eye!

Managed to get the basecoat on the wings, still some rubbing to do, but it went on OK.
Started the top engines too and im close to finishing one, not sure if its too dark, so i may need to mist it some, but Red 5 Revell pics do show them pretty dirty and dark anyways.
Ive also added red acetate to the exhausts, it just enhances the studio feel for me as something similar is used on Reds 2 and 3.
Ignore the sheen lol, the dullcote is still going off.

Wait a minute - I think I see a seam line there on that engine! (HAD to look really hard to come up with just ONE think to bust your balls on!)
STUNNING WORK!!
Hey it looks like you outlined some (much) of the raised detail with pencil. The ILM long-hairs did this with the Jedi Training Remote, and that prop is the only one I've paid any attention to with regard to this technique.
In other words, I don't know if they did it on other models, and I haven't done it on other models. I'm thinking however that it will add yet another dimension of detail to your build...
RSVP!!![]()
LOL Rob i hate taking close up pics, I think it shows my work to be mediocre compared to some here lol, but thank you, sincerley!
As for the raised engine detail, no buddy i didnt use pencil, i spread Vandyke brown acrylic over them, and buffed with a make up applicator, no telling my girlfriend though huh lol.
All other shading was done with Tamiya light smoke and pastels/pigments!
Ill get to the other engine in the AM and begin work on the upper wings weather and markings.
Going back to the pencil technique, i know i can see it on Red 2's engines, it does look good, but wasnt sure what else ILM used it on apart from the ISD builds, its interesting to hear they used it on the training ball buddy!
lee
Lee the finished engine looks superb. Truly professional.
Actually, I was referring to the unfinished areas... Looks like you've outlined this areas.

Ah haaa, now i see what you mean Rob, no buddy again not pencil, thats the effect of the first rub fown with the steel wool buddy, it takes a minor shave off the white and shows the black undercoat.
Theres a bit more rubbing to do all over the wings/cans, but at the moment, some of that wonderful rub/swirl pattern in the paint now may be lost.
This is due to me having to rely more and more on pastels due to Red 5's intricate weather job, and the fact ill have to seal them, ill figure something out lol.
lee
Can you do a video,, I would love to see how you do this stuff, I was impressed that I recognized the smoke used. I did tests with smoke on my MPC falcon but thought it was a bit too glossy, prob cos I was laying it on too thick
.
The raised sections that Rob pointed out happened on mine but in my lack of experience I saw this as bad & kept throwing more & more white on. Eventually I gave up as it was so thick I was loosing details. Why didn't I wait till you had finished yours.
WAX ON, WAX OFF
Those seem lines are a mare to get rid of, I ended up scraping mine down then using fine paper to tie em back in.
How do you get so much control over the water stains? And your not allowed to say "years of experience"
Is it just the light or is the far top engine a different color white to the main wing section?
Can you do mine
Stunning, Lee. I'm re calling this thread the New, new testament!!
Guy, the smoke will matt, just dullcote it buddy and yes dont go too thick with it, it loses its effect IMO.
No worries on the raised panel scuffing, youve done great on your build, and like i said before, the next one you do will only get better, so we all have a lot to look out for from you over the next few years huh lol.
LOL years of experience, nah buddy, im still the noob compared to most the studio scale guys here, i just love to learn new stuff buddy and im not afraid to let my mind run riot lol.
You have a good eye, the white on the engine is indeed different, i used a matt coat on the engine thruster as i needed to use pastels, and didnt want to go rubbing down gloss to get traction for them on the delicate Phantom engines.
I think it worked out OK lol.
As for me doing yours lol.......NO lol, i dont wanna see another X wing for a while now, need to move on to other builds when im done here, but you dont need anybody to do anything for ya buddy, you got the skills and it really shows!
lee
Great jod Lee! Im glad to know all of the builders here on the RPF!
Come on Lee, its not Xmas anymore! Hope you are feeling a lot better now? It would be great to see where your up to. Happy new year.
OK well, im virus free, and had a great Xmas/New Year, so hell i better get back to the job at hand or the the gaffer (Chris) will give me the tin tack LOL.
OK well ive begun work on the wings paint wise, what you see here is all airbrush, ive sealed it up with dullcote so i can now refine with pastels and add washes where i need to.
Most chipping here is done with latex, but im going to be scraping away with the micro chisel too to try get a very studio feel to the model.
Youll have to excuse the pics without flash, its dull in my attic even under the spot lights and i didnt have time to take her into daylight lol.
There is some idealisation here and there, but i want to try use the Revell pics as much as i can and that scuppers me a little. Still much to do, but once i get the rest up to this level, i can then tinker away, like Rob has said, these things are never done until there...well.....done hehe!

Wow Lee that΄s fantastic! That΄s some detailed weathering...stunning. Though Luke should really use a high pressure cleaner...Makes me wish the kit was available again (and I΄d have the money for it...).

Fatastic! Wow the flash versus no-lash shots really show a huge difference in contrast! I'd imagine that to the eye, the contrast level is inbetween.
Great work Lee!
Thanks Dan, yeah shes a dirty girl indeed lol.
Rob, the effect to the eye is indeed between what you see between the flash/no flash pics. It does look a lot more effective in person, i just wish i could take better pics.....ill work on it lol.
lee
Stunning Lee, I'm so glad to have the chance to see this progress, its all sinking in ready for my next attempt. I know this is a pic we prob all have but I have put it through a few steps in photoshop to improve it.
I can highly recommend a bench daylight light from the RNIB, they sell these and they are fantastic for working with photgraphy & mixing paint under normal indoor lighting.
Also this pick really shows how great your paint work is.
great, perfect, outstanding
Masterpiece !
Lee, what a perfect Red 5 Paintjob![]()

Guy, ill have to take a look buddy, i still have to buy some lighting for my bluescreen when i get round to it, so something that can double up would be nice!
That pic is about the best there is, and its hard to follow, but still priceless.
Andre, thank you buddy, id love after this to do a Red 5 Hero now of my own lol, i never really liked this bird, but after working on it for a while, its grown on me so much.
Its a hard one to do, as so many have built her so well, but im slowly learning as i go.
lee
Allan
