V3 ROTJ AT ST "chicken walker" first build/Instructions

So I am finally just about done with the molds for the V3 of the ROTJ AT ST, nearly 2 years or so after purchasing the pattern from Steve. I will post a JY thread soon when the molds are done but for now I want to get started on the instructions as i work my way thru the first castings.

First up is an explanation as to why this is a 3rd version of this. 1st version is the one that had the short legs and no interior, I think most people got the longer legs from Steve at some point. 2nd was the longer legs and the interior available. This one has the longer legs of course but there are a number of important changes on top of that.

1rst the chassis has been lengthened by about 6mm and widened by about 2-3mm to accept the correct z1300 disk brake part for the neck.

2nd is that some of the leg fittings are now cast with the threads for the button head and socket cap screws in them. They will strip out if tightened too much, and this still needs to be a fixed pose model when finished but the threading and the fact that i am including the hardware seen in the pic below will make the finished model stronger, and will actually allow the modeler to fiddle with the pose a bit before committing to a pose.

Here you can see that your able to play around with the positioning of the leg easily.

Next up is what i guess you would call the hip, the part that connects the chassis to the upper leg. I am casting it with 1/4 brass embedded in it on the male side and the female side has the 1/4 hole pre set into it. Also note that the screw that holds the pivot joint for the hip secures from inside the chassis, no more pins sliding out.

Up next would be the rubber neck boot, on the right is a part that i turned on the lathe to match exactly what came with the Nice N kits, on the left is the new neck boot, also turned on a lathe, only this one is much larger and hopefully as correct as i can get it. It has the correct diameter to seat into the F-14 part as well as the new correct z1300 disk on the chassis.

This part will be cast in black urethane rubber, the one on the nice n was latex if i remember correctly. The black urethane will be much more stable.

And the new boot in action here, I machined it with a "seat" for the F-14 part to sit in, but also it can move around, up and down, side to side without revealing the neck armature or causing a space.

No, in my experience any brass that is thin enough to fit in these legs are not strong enough to add any real reinforcement. These legs are going to be cast with about a 20% mix of alluminum powder in the legs, that will stiffen them up considerably. It's the same thing i did with the PD legs and the Tie Interceptor wings, really helps to add rigidity to the parts.

With the alluminum powder added you should be able to pick a pose any have the model free standing with no additional support, as long as you don't leave it in a sunny spot or something. Again, this won't really work like a stop motion model, where it can be positioned after finishing, but should be fine for a fixed pose model.

Yep all the molds are done, sidelined a bit by the x wing and the poisonous spider bite but molds are up and running. I will post a JY thread for this and the x wing as soon as i can.
