But if you're referring to the long, skinny triangular-shaped grey stripes on the sides of the nose cone, these are evident in at least a couple published photos, and Dean would not be the first to incorporate them into a paint-up. I agree with Mike only in that the yellow is often over done on replicas in general. I think Dean's looks fine. To Dean's point, reference pics make it difficult to judge, and for anyone who has painted an X-Wing, we all know this is a hard color to nail. I used a mustardy yellow ochre on mine layered on thinly, hit it with white and black pastels to knock it back, and it still looks a tad bright. All my colors do, especially in photos. But in person they look just right. Last edited by PHArchivist; 04-23-2009 at 10:04 AM. |

I have used this method of swatching a few times now but I find the viewing angle makes a complete difference to the swatch, this swatch looks from a pink to a dark mustard depending on where I'm sat. Its tricky thing indeed to get color correct even if you get the viewing angle remotely near perfect.

Re: Teaser pics of GF's Red 5
I get a very saturated yellow, which is kind of like the yellow ive wanted to mix for a while, but never quite got it right, i like it anyhoo, for some reason, i always blow at mixing decent hues of yellow.
I think it also depends on what the yellow is applied over, changes the hue quite a lot from my experience? lee |

Re: Teaser pics of GF's Red 5
Them's the ones, this was the thing Jason and I were debating a few months ago in that great X-wing thread. I've not seen a build prior to this where they were actual stripes; folk had been doing them as lines of smudging or laser hits. I have probably missed some as I was away from the boards over the southern summer.

I incorporated this initially in my FX toy conversion a year or two back, plus emulated this on my more recent Pro-Shop build. ![]() But I digress - this is Dean's thread. Back to his model now! Last edited by PHArchivist; 04-24-2009 at 07:38 AM. |

Re: Teaser pics of GF's Red 5
Havent got a pic to hand, but i painted in the grey stripe on the nose for Chris' Salzo V1 build a good while back, though that part was at least a well known R5 trait.
