    Aug 30, 2012 - Styrene Probe Droid (Jason's build) #1

I started drafting an acrylic armature, with the end goal of having a side and bottom mount. I will make the .ai files available once I dial in the measurements, so if you choose to do the same kind of thing you can have the parts laser cut. Here's where I am at the moment:

    Test parts:

There will also be a neck collar, and the equatorial transition ring from top of body to bottom. Mars had a great idea to cut it in the shape of the Imperial cog, which I love! No one but the builder will know it's there. Fun!

Also going to lasercut the leg discs with precut holes for the hardware (so no sweating the drill press!). Maybe some leg sections too, depending on if it makes sense. I'd love to offer a super-sturdy solution.

Antennas on the large version in the film extend pretty far, which probably won't be that easy to do with the miniature.

cool, never knew the probe droid was in ROTJ! Relly neat seeing all of these styrene buildups, must be a read daunting task building it from the ground up even with the styrene pulls. If it is anything like your other builds im sure this is going to look great.

Like any thing, it's always better/worse than you anticipate. But like these kinds of builds, it's really just a long series of smaller tasks that add up to something you can sit back and think "this is amazing. How the HELL did I do it?!" LOL.

But really, like any of these, it's the group effort that makes it a reality. A friend wrote this to me today, and I could not agree more:

You can ID 50% of a build with 2 people
but it takes 4 people to ID 80%
and then 8 people to ID 90% it

...there's a exponential need for people for the last IDs!

That's the rough idea, yeah, especially with Hyperdyne's kit!

I am grabbing some various Plastruct bits in my order, covering my bases (spares always get used somewhere interesting)... I am thinking the many many smallest head lenses (labeled #2 here) are probably VHH-12 as the dims match the opening in the lamp part. You can also choose black butyrate for this part which is cool.

    #1 I haven't IDed yet, but could be a couple of VHE-12s.

#3 is 19 to 20mm at the widest, and VHE-24 or 28 could be modded to come close. I'm probably on the wrong track with this one.

2: Are red underneath, after a very long time studying the ref material it appears that they are more than just half domes and sit inside the plastruct lamp also.

Very likely a Red LED from days gone by, one could even go as far as suggesting its an 8mm Red lensed LED from days gone by.

A glacial pace with everything else I have going on - but DANG the parts being assembled are pretty sweet.
