Glad to help guys, there are indeed 2 parts in the kit and they are identical !![]()
Guy if you need it for just that panel, i bagged one in the UK, so ill shoot you the part buddy.
Julien, thanks again bud.
Lee
Guy no worries, yes i think having one would be wise, seems to maybe share some parts from the M16 too, at least thats the impression i get?

EMA order has landed, I guess I have no excuse for not starting! Gulp!
Thats great news Guy. Cant wait to see you "enjoying" building these legs, just getting the first one done and seeing it work is cool.
Hardest part TBH, is making the joints run as true as possible, but then, the prop has legs so wonky, there is room for error LOL, thats my excuse and im sticking to it.
lee
I'm already head scratchin, what size angle strip did you use & is it trimmed at all? I ordered 4.8mm but have a feeling its too big, the next size down seems too small though at 3.2mm??????
Pe prepared for Question tIme with this one mate![]()

Guy ill measure in the AM for you. Think it was the same stuff used on the Y wing, so 1/4 maybe? I just eyeballed it and it came out about spot on.
Lee
Those arms are amazing! What a fantastic build.
Well, my first ever attempt at casting is under way, very much like Lee a few weeks back. I've made the first thigh bone of the PD & have just poured the silicone over the 2 types of small Knuckle joints.
Saturn V- M16
Saturn V -Reversed Saturn V.
Fingers crossed when I wake up in the morning I'll have a working mould. There was a lot of tiny air bubbles at the surface after it was poured, so I'm hoping its worked OK!
Should be fine mate, you want those bubbles to rise upwards, mine did, but left a clean mold to pour into.
Post some pics soon Guy, be good too see your work on the legs.
Lee
Hmm mixed results...
The Saturn v Knuckle has come out great & the first 3 pulls only have 2 bubbles between them & are more than usable.
The Saturn V- M16 part is a different matter. The mould had some air bubbles around the undercut sections, I'd even blocked it off at the back to help this but the pulls had loads of bubbles round the detail & due to the undercuts it was near impossible to remove the pull without tearing the mould. The 3rd attempt destroyed the mould.
However If I hack out the M16 part of the pull I can still use the outer ring with original M16 parts on the inside, I will try to cast theM16 wheel again but on its own this time to see if its any better.
Pics to follow

Well not a total loss then. Just so you know, the M3 Halftrack does use the same drivetrain as the M16 buddy, not sure if that will save you casting them?
As for the Saturn V small knuckle, i drilled a 2.4mm hole in the back cone, for a 4/40 cap head to pass through, not sure how ILM did there joint with no visible screw, but some do have a larger hole.....so maybe the bolt is inside the hollow original part?
The way ive done it, you can really notice, as the cap head, is captive by a 4mm hole, in the back on said, cast cone...allowing me to drill just a 2.5mm hole for access.........if that makes sense?

Guy, ill call you the weekend, run it past you with some pics buddy.
Lee
Nothing new here as I'm kinda watching Lees build like a hawk for tips.
I've split the Saturn V part added the braces inside to lock em together & also added a .60 styrene strip just below the top edge so the cast part sits on a ledge but also its proud of the lip unlike the kit version. My leg is slightly shorter than the kit leg and a whole lot fatter, bit like Real life!!!

Looking good Guy, nd, clean work buddy, dont bag on yourself for that, see nothing wrong there...your gonna nail these puppies closer than me for sure, your eyes are awesome of late for detail.
Ill fire a pic up in a bit of the second leg progress. Havent got to that lower joint yet, so ill do a pic tutorial for you in the AM bud.
Oh, nice clean castings there Mr C.

Cheers mate, I need to learn Mould handling better & as always, impatience will be my down fall. I think I've worked out that 2 sizes of angle strip was used on the thigh. The strip thats on the casting to left of the kit parts should be 3.2 (.125 inch) & the 2 that go on the edge to form the U channel are the 4.8mm size. I think!!!
Same with the lower leg part, Im pretty sure its the next size down in ABS angle, got some on the way so will know soon.
Thanks to a very kind RPF'er I'll be able to trash the 3 remaining cast eyes also & make them completely from Kit parts. Cheers again for that
Lee, I think I'm gunna copy what I used to do when making guitar necks, always make 2 at a time incase something goes wrong, so hopefully I'll have 2 sets when done that are both much better than the castings. If I do I'll sell a set to recoup some of the costs of this build. Then again the amount of work needed just for one set is pretty out there.
Guy, sorry, meant to say, i did use 4.8mm L channel yes. Used it all round, then just sanded the facia trimmed strip.
Making two sets, hmm, no way would i want to do that lol, but its a good way to make back some money i guess if the interest is there.
Man i need to find some nice RPF'ers lol, could do with more of the eye rings, but then, my dome type cast eyes are pretty nice TBH, so ill more than likely use them.
lee
Well, heres my attempt at the other Saturn V leg so far. TBH, this one had me worried, theres a lot going on with it, but, so far, its been really easy.
Cant say some of my joint mounting styrene strips are 100% cannon lol, but rather that than paint rubbing off the joint knuckles.
Hoping to try finish this up over the weekend, then its onto the really easy legs.
Ive tried to take a few pics to show how much articulation this leg has, its way more dynamic than the other large leg.
Still need to sand off the weld detail on the KVII parts, but its all very WIP right now.

Looking good guys! I like how they left the bits you'd usually trim off on that long olive piece (at least that's what it looks like).
