So, do you REALLLY want to make an accurate 32-inch Falcon? I CHALLENGE YOU!!!
I think this subject needed a thread.
I have seen a LOT of posts over the last couple of years where folks are taking the MR Falcon and reworking/ repainting it, or making their own scratch built models. Good for you! nice work!!!!! And everyone (naturally) responds: "BEST FALCON EVAAAAR!" Definitely the MOST accurate one I have ever seen!!!" Well, not quite. "Oh.... no he DIDNNNN'T!" Yes I did. Deal with it. ![]() Since this is the place where everyone obsesses over teeny weeny model kit parts (and which kit-issue it came from) I am kind-of surprised that nobody has made an EXACTLY-ACCURATE replica of the Falcon yet! Except for me. YAH. I SAID IT. Deal, beeyotches! ![]() First off...scratch builds can't count. While they are BEAUTIFUL and impressive work, they weren't copied from digital scans or measurements of the original 32-inch filming model, so parts location and geometry had to be guessed or triangulated, So you are OUT! Sorry... So people rework the MR models, but I see pics of these models and think...You are still missing a lot of details... -Missing parts -missing ILM names -Missing pilot figures -Incorrect blast damage -Incorrect paint job As someone who spent several days handling, photographing, measuring, scanning and studying the original model, and about 1 year helping to develop the model, I would be willing to help out here if some folks want to make their models REALLY accurate. Frank, Moe, and Jason also worked on this as well, but I don't know if they want to get into the "fight". So I am throwing down the gauntlet. Let me see someone make theirs as good as mine!!! ![]() I could post pics of my rebuild/repaint but I don't know how to post high-rez pics to save my life. Oh, he did it NOW. It is ON!!! (to quote Ripley): COME ON!!! COME ON!!!! Last edited by SD Studios; 03-07-2011 at 06:23 AM. |

A scratchbuilt Falcon, is out, compared to the MR, thats off, ive had several folk comment the MR is too small for a start? Anyone care to embelish on this?
Maybe im wrong, as ive not had 4 years at the archives, sadly im not that lucky, as if i did, id be churning out TONS of models, just like you are now in this very forum, as id know ALL the hues and colors, ALL the kit correct parts, period, id be.....a GOD .Sorry, but, you need to lay of the Wheaties ![]() lee |

So what are you proposing exactly... a post-off of mods? A collaborative effort to rebuild? a Kit of extra parts that are needed to upgrade an MR falcon?
I'm confused - but interested as all he11 Jedi Dade Last edited by Jedi Dade; 03-07-2011 at 11:24 AM. |

Yep, this call out is useless with out pics. Sorry Steve, use some of that Wheaties energy to find a Image Host like Flikr and upload.
Otherwise my '77 Hasbro is more accurate! And I can post pics!

"Since this is the place where everyone obsesses over teeny weeny model kit parts (and which kit-issue it came from) I am kind-of surprised that nobody has made an EXACTLY-ACCURATE replica of the Falcon yet!
Except for me." I dont know if you can say that if you look back to 03-07-2008 on your own topic (http://www.therpf.com/f10/how-accurize-mr-falcon-40248/) You stated "-I built all of the seven missing parts from scratch, since I don’t care to spend $100+ for the kits, and they were all pretty simple to replicate. A couple are already on the model in other places. It took me maybe 4 hours to scratch-build the replacement parts. No big whoop. Close-enough for me" how ever you also say "First off...scratch builds can't count. -Missing parts -missing ILM names -Missing pilot figures -Incorrect blast damage -Incorrect paint job" Sounds like your could almost be in scratch building territory you built 7 parts from scratch an triangulated the missing parts "So you are OUT! Sorry..." (using your words). I find it funny you spend a massive amount of time trying to get it as accurate possible but dont spend the few extra $100 for the parts needed now i am not trying discredit your work at all i am just looking a it with a critical eye. But i wish i could take on the challenge but that wont be for a few years To post hi res use flicker. Flicker doesnt resize your image like others an just post the link |

Re: So, do you REALLLY want to make an accurate 32-inch Falcon? I CHALLENGE YOU!!!
Wait, he claims the most accurate Falcon to date, based on an MR, but with, triangulated fitment, scratchbuilt parts
?Have i got all that right? If so, its not accurate in the slightest, well, no more so that the epic work Phil Brown is laying down right now, and skimping $100 for donors parts, is just not on, if your going to lay claim, to the ultimate 32" bird. This is all way too funny, and its way too early for an April fool's too .lee |

Re: So, do you REALLLY want to make an accurate 32-inch Falcon? I CHALLENGE YOU!!!
Theres way more than 7 missing parts.
The MR Falcon as nice as it is wasn't/isn't 99% accurately detailed as stated in the selling pitches. It has alot of scratched or sufficed parts. Its a beutiful replica that was massed produced so you would expect to lose some detail in the process. How about you share some of your reference & scan & help builders out rather than rubbing their noses in an already complex & frustrating build. I can gurantee you there will be a build better than yours in the not too distant furture. For someone so talented with scanning & photography its hard to believe you can't post some pictures in a thread.... Edit: Im not trying to be a sm#@!t a%s as Im a novice in all aspects. I just see people trying really hard to do their best with what they get. Which isn't much. Now youve apparently been quite blessed to have access to all these guys dreams that would help make alot of peoples lives a bit easier. I would have just hoped someone that has so much to offer could have done it in a more respectable way. Like it or not there are people that would be looking up to you for your knowlege. That respect deserves some responsabillity. The two threads I have read sound like someone seriously affected by glue, resin or drugs....Maybe all. Respectfully Jason. Re: So, do you REALLLY want to make an accurate 32-inch Falcon? I CHALLENGE YOU!!!
AGAIN, this was all tongue-in-cheek. See all of the LAUGHIE FACES???!!!
I USED THE LAUGHIE FACES!!!! Ok, Let's see... Yes, I know the MR Falcon is not perfect. There is NO SUCH THING as a "perfect" replica. FACT: No matter how much reference you have, there will always be some deviation in geometry, color, weathering, etc. FACT: Even if you had the original model in front of you, you still would never create an EXACT reproduction. FACT: As model builders, all we can do is get it to the point where we can say "it looks like the XXXYYY to me". and be happy with it. FACT: There are probably about 1500 to 2000 individual pieces in the 32" Falcon filming model, so it is pretty-much impossible to get every part reproduced precisely. So, we will all have to agree that we can only get it as close as we can given our resources at the time. In that respect, I will say that the MR model is the most accurate one out there, as MR's resources were much better than the average model-builder. A direct digital scan will always win over the "Look over the photo" method. We took a bazillion photos and Pantone(d) the model as best we could. What I HAVE noticed here is most folks do not paint and finish their models to the level of the original. The MR replica is CERTAINLY not on the same level. It just isn't possible to reproduce a one-off filming model's complex paintjob in a factory. Period. In 2007, I took a couple of weeks off from work and spent about 65 hours completely refinishing the MR model. There were a few panels that were pretty much-perfect, so I didn't paint them out with the base color. I just painted over them. What I would like to accomplish in all of this is give everyone some "guidelines" to follow if they want to make a very accurate model, based on my 18 months working on the project and numerous trips to the archive. So if we are all done with the pissing and whining, let's get started. Please add your input so we can develop a really great set of "reference and rules" for the builders going forward. Cool? I will start a new thread for this... |

Hi there,
You don't mess about do you! in which case neither will I. In your travels around the archives did you by any chance get some shots of the BIG Falcon? - if so are you able/willing to share them with us mad souls trying to build her?Cheers Nick |

Re: So, do you REALLLY want to make an accurate 32-inch Falcon? I CHALLENGE YOU!!!
Steve, is your near-perfect Falcon based on contemporary photos and recent in-person observations?
Have you accounted for age and deterioration of the paint over time? Email me your pics PHarchivist@aol.com and I'll post them here. If you can add text effects to your posts, I'm sure you can post pics. If you PM me a phone number, I can call you and walk you through it, if you're at the computer. You do not need a host server either. Just your own hard drive. |

This model (and artist) would give a run for the money on any studio scale Falcon paint job I've seen.

Steve if you want to put together a tutorial or something - a word document would be fine with me... I'd love to take a look at it.
All "this is more accurate than that" aside - and with the VAST differences between how most artists paint, and weather and do just about anything, your method is of interest to me. I learn new tricks from everyone - and as a Falcon NUT I'm all on board ![]() Jedi Dade |

I'm not that interested in all the cosmetic stuff - well not at that the moment at least, but if you're serious about helping out, then posting some reference pics or maybe that digital scan would be a great start. |

Re: So, do you REALLLY want to make an accurate 32-inch Falcon? I CHALLENGE YOU!!!
WOW...
I personally find this thread insulting towards a member like tk1608. Who has the guts to take on a project like a scratch built Falcon (and allowing us to share in his journey). I guess what I don't understand is why someone would rattle peoples cages and then act like it was a big joke??? The last bit of SD Studios' recent post sounds like he's asking for help from the very same people he's insulted??????? This is to all the members who have or will build Falcons... forget the "guidelines and rules"... you don't need them. Just build the way you have been, because you do it well. |
