    Sep 29, 2007 - Snowspeeder AT-AT & Falcon repaint #1

This is a lttle plee for a bit of help from the experts here. After months of pacing up & down & can I or cant I, I have decided to have a go at repainting/weathering my MR SS Speeder Falcon and AT-AT. I'm not thinking of a complete overhall but like My Han EE blaster I just couldn't take the look of it. I'm pretty confident but have never tackled a model of this size. The main thing i need help with is what is a good but not too expensive airbrush kit to start with, & what are the best paints to use. Rgarding oil washed is this just standard artist oil paints & what do you thin them with? I'm ok with pastels & drybrushing but have only ever used Humbrol model paints for drybrushing. Is there a better paint for this as well. Any help even down to the blue masking tape to buy would all be a great help as I totally trust you lot, the reserch i have done has left me with a few blanks. I appreciate there is a wealth of info out there but even a few good titbits could get me on my way? Cheers Guy

Be very carefull when masking the falcon, some areas paint might lift off even if using low tack tape, I wouldn't worry about the Snowspeeder and AT-AT. Lucky me when I masked a section the paint lifted off only on a small piping detail and was a easy fix.

The paint on the Speeder is pretty solid and with a light sanding to even it out it works fine as a base for the repaint. If you decide to go so far as to take it apart LMK and I'll show you how it comes apart so as not to break anything.

What airbrush experience do you have Guy? Nil? If so maybe a good starting point would be a single action from badger, or maybe even an Aztek?
Id also think about getting some good practice in before touching the MR pieces buddy, not trying to tell you how to suck eggs lol, but its a big task even to do the speeder, let alone the Falcon.
    Look forward to your progress

Thanks dont panic, I'm gunna do some basic kit bashing & practice Like crazy till i get confident. I have done many hours of spraying guitars with full size spray guns but never with an air brush.Regarding oil washes, something I have never done, is it normal oil paint in the tube so to speak or a different type & what do you dilute it with?

Guy, i think youll have no worries then buddy, your just doing it on a finer scale is all lol.
As for washes, yep, i use run of the mill oils, and thin with white spirits to the viscosity you need!

For washes I use artists oil paints thinned with white mineral oil spirits.

As far as airbrushes I would go for an Iwata. They have much better control (i.e. easier to master) and are a lot less finicky than Badger airbrushes in terms of cleaning etc. Plus, if you are going to put down the money for an airbrush and plan to use it a lot I would pay a little extra and get a double-action airbrush. You will get a lot more use out of it in the long run and be able to do a lot more things with it. I have both an Iwata and a Badger. I first owned the Badger and they are real b***h to maintain and clean. Now that I have an Iwata I don't even use the Badger anymore. If you shoot some paint or laquer thinner through it after every use you should never have to take it apart to clean it. I find the best thing for cleaning an airbrush is alcohol stove fuel (methyl hydrate). Just make sure you don't spray near a heat source and spray it into a cloth to avoid the mist going everywhere and don't breathe any of the cleaners in.

If you haven't done a lot of work with airbrushes I would definitely practice first before you work on your models.

If there is a way of taking this beauty apart with out damage that would be of great help, cheers?
