Cheers Stu bud
Thankfully the scribing is about 80% mirrored on the other side so its made it a lot quicker to get a move on the scribing.
I need to clean the edge of the hull a bit more :-)

Looking sweet Guy, YOUR work is stunning, and, your scribing looks great to me!
Lee
Cheers Lee, they're a little deep on this side but with the amount of primer and paint going o it wont be a problem. My big trouble is the way its all going to attach, It will end up being lot more work than normal and some very severe adjustment when it joins the skirt but I think its the only sensible way to do it.
Hoping to have the tail done tonight aside from the guns, then I can get cracking on the front end, this will also be a lot easier now I have the panel lines in the tail. Since i've trimmed it in height it does joint the skirt a lot better, I also need to draw the panel lines on the rear skirt so I can do the cut out. I've decided to weld both the pulls together to giver the skirt more strength, I'll deal with raised panels later as I think plain old flat sheet will work anyway.
Those pics make it look gigantic :P Looks awesome so far
If they were handing out medals for builds this would be a strong contender for a high position on the podium. Great progress Guy.
Truly tremendous !!!!! Looking forward to every post Guy !!
Phil
Thanks Fellas, If nothing else I'll have 1/4 of a Slave 1
Been working out the panel lines on the front end this morning but the pull is pretty pitted and un even so I'm going to have to try n smooth it all out and then start re mapping and head scratching![]()
Sounds like a BIG tin of P38 is in order mate. That should put a good skim on it, then sand and buff like there is no tomorrow i guess. At least these pulls are a good advert for putty buddy
.
Tail/trunk looks great inspite of the length debacle, i know you can work the same magic elsewhere.

Well I can tell you all one thing. That's the last time I help to offer anything to the group. Nothing but criticism and insults.
Have fun if you can, sorry it's a debacle.
I think we've hit a problem here in that Lee needs to Vent and I feel the need to talk about what I'm doing on the build, as I am after all doing it and trying to get as good a result as possible. Like I've said before there are around 10 or so of these sets out there and If I can be the guine pig that helps others understand what to do or "a way" of doing it then how is that a bad thing.
The pulls I have aren't easy to use and they need a lot of extra work on them to make the surface smooth to create " Sharp Work"
Below is what I'm talking about, It needs to be built up with and smoothed out in nearly every square inch of the top half of the front hull, you can see there are loads of pits in the surface and the curved lines are ver very wavy. To get this to match the neatness I've acquired on the rear will take a lot of extra work, fact.
I'm not sure if Jason is reacting to Lees post or the fact that I mention what work is involved to makes these hulls into a great Slave 1, either way its a bit of a shame and sorry you feel like that. I am entitled to view my findings and thoughts on anything I do. I have spoken with Lee and politely asked him to keep any similar posts to private PM's and not in my thread, on the other hand what Lees suggested is actually great advice for the problem at hand. So its the manor in which its said that we need to avoid? Agreed Lee?
As for :Nothing but criticism and insults? Is this directed at me? Please go back through this thread and point out where I have been untoward re insults? Criticism is not essentially a bad thing as it leads to improvement usually and thats what I'm try to do, Improve things.
I have had 4 kits built from Vac pulls, some very large. This is by far the worst example I've had, but I also got looked after by George and he helped me out and I am great full to own them as they're most likely the best chance I'll have at making a slave 1. If I'm not allowed to talk about them whilst I'm building then there's not a lot to say other than just show pics and mention kit parts. I want everyone who owns these pulls to be able to have a go at making them work, which in my book is a good thing as over $2500 has been spent on them between a few people, I hate waisting styrene especially when it can look this good.
Lee will keep his tone and manor to a decent level in this thread or he will be on the naughty step for a week.
Well going by this is the internet Guy, and there is no "tone" its impossible for me to always convey, but agreed, my mannerism will be nothing but rose tints from here forth.
Anything but the naughty step though, blub blub blub

It's directed squarely at Lee, who kindly took things to email. I take offense at his choice of the word "debacle", implying that the vacform hulls were a mismanaged or even disingenuous project. It also smacks of superiority, which I also have zero patience for. His great advice is buried in passive aggressive insults about the hull. Am I supposed to not take notice? I am proud of the things I make as much as the next guy, and feel the need to defend it. He isn't even building one, so I assume he's only seen your pulls?
I did my best on the bucks with the data I had, in a good faith effort to help people build a Slave 1. The pulls that I personally received were very nice, and I'm very disappointed if there are ones out there that are poorly pulled. You are doing a tremendous job, and nothing you have posted has been something that any one could find fault with.
But yeah, back to Lee. I am choosing to pull out of future offerings like this or the T-16, to avoid becoming involved in the negativity that the studio scale board oozes, and having it irritate me. Life is irritating enough, and I very much dislike being made to feel negative thoughts in my hobby life. Personal decision.
And why does he need to vent on your project?
From Merriam-Webster:
Debacle
a. a great disaster.
b. a complete failure.
Well, considering the time invested, not to mention the $s (by a large number of people not just me), characterizing (Allan Hansen) getting the length of the studio scale S1 wrong as "debacle" is probably accurate.
As to the pulls Guy received, I don't think mine have the same defects. But, to be honest, it's been awhile since I last looked at them. I know Jason put a lot of effort into getting the bucks smooth.
As Guy has already replied to my earlier post, wherein I took responsibility for any issues with length, he's posting this as a tutorial so that the model can be improved. I firmly believe that's what anyone involved with working on Slave has been doing the entire time: trying to make it better. No SS model replica is going to be perfect right out of the gate. Sure, we all wish the first iteration was on the money. But, the reality is, this isn't an easy hobby. If it was, a lot of folks wouldn't find it as rewarding.
Agreed.
(except the debacle part. As far as the length being off, like you or Guy said earlier, it's something you only catch after you build one, and Guy is being the trail blazer by virtue of being first, finding the problem spots. No one can know the *true* dimensions until you build a good-faith effort, unless you've laid hands on the real deal)
First off, thanks Jason. Second off its you and Lee that need to resolve issues not you and the hobby. Id you have a row with a woman at work you dont get divorced at home???
I appreciate its not meant to be a horrible experience a hobby and look at the percentage of time spent being happy to disgruntled, its pretty low.
Allan, its not a debacle by any means, Like my tag line says, part of my drive is so that you actually get to see a finished Slave, it may not be your own but its a indication that it wasn't a failed or wasted project. I know what this meant to you and seeing mine painted will be a gift from me, you cant have it though
It would be nice to see some other pulls as this news that mine aren't great is a bit annoying to say the least. We tried to tackle the thin ness but the mottled dips in my front hull pull are a pain to say the least. It would've been grate for me to join kit parts to Styrene like my A-Wing pulls from (Legend Mike P).
FTR Lee hasn't seen my pulls but has heard me moan about them a lot, nothing that isn't moan worthy though!
Lee, I will need Elsa to take pics of you on the step please?![]()
Guy, you have a good point. Love the analogy!
I went back and had a look at Rich's thread this morning and his (Allan's ) hull does look to be about right in the picks, you can see where I've re invented the panel lines to make it look close, more noticeable at either end on mine.
Like I said I "HAD" to trim some off each end on mine as the pulls would not take mods to make them the same length as the untrimmed pull. I also had 2 sets and they where pretty close with the same issue, so again just throwing it out there, I could be wrong. The ILM pics show the tail to be around 13.5 inches in length and mine is a tad under 13.
I think I've managed to re work the panel lines to make a good go of it though and use optical deception as opposed down right bangon'ness![]()
We're all going to be "close enough" on these Slave 1s, as it stands now. I keep waiting for more reference to surface, before I start in on mine, but I feel the start coming sooner than later. Two blimps and 10 to 12 smaller models stand in the way at the moment, lol.
One thing we all have to understand on Vacuformed parts is that you can control how it adapts to the buck, that can be consistent, but you can't control how thick the resulting plastic sheet becomes as it deforms upon heating it. It will be different from piece to piece even in the best of conditions.
For that matter it will be different from side to side on the same sheet of plastic once it's been heated.
