Re: Shuttle Tydirium
Sorry if it's a left field question, but maybe you could straighten parts & then laminate their interior with a layer of carbon fiber/regular fiberglas veneer?

Re: Shuttle Tydirium
Crikey, that does look a swine to sort out, I reckon you should be sent a whole new kit...
Forgive me for not knowing this, but why put dye in there if that's caused the warping problems...I would've thought it wouldn't matter what colour the resin is..it's gonna be painted anyhoo.. Good luck with it though, it's a great looking ship, and I'm sure you'll be able to make it look awesome..!! Cheers Phil |

Re: Shuttle Tydirium
Thanks Phil. Look it isn't as bad as it seems. The warps are all getting straightened out and the other main parts were just fine. I understand the kit if released again will be much stronger. Half the trouble is where I live I think.down here in Oz it gets really f...ing hot. I mean really hot and if some ****** of a parcel worker leaves any resin kits on The Tarmac for an hour, you may as well put it in a microwave. Now I don't know this is what happened here but as with any garage kit you will get some warps and cleanup. At the end of the day this will look great and I don't regret buying it at all. I think that leaving these sorts of kits in a box for a while is a bad idea. They should be built within a certain amount of time. I just pulled an MPC injection molded snowspeeder out of the box after 30 years and it is warped also. It will all come good and Steve has offered to replace any parts that dont. But being a stubborn a hole I'm determined to make this one good. I'll get some more progress pix up next week.
Simon. |

Re: Shuttle Tydirium
Dead right. You should see my 1/18 Vader TIE kit (Lasse's kit) - it's gone 'orrible. It was beautiful when it arrived but will take a LOT of hot water to fix now. Curse my hot tin shed and slow slow kit building...

@Martyn. How about a new years resolution? Mine is to complete all my kits next year. Apart from the 5 footer of course but I think that is doable once we have the dims sorted. I plan on taking at least 6 to Wasmex. This includes the BIG walker. |

I'm glad you've got it under control Simon. I'm really looking forward to seeing the build finished. I've not seen many completed to date.

Re: Shuttle Tydirium
Well I hope you get it together!
it's great for making multiple small parts...and larger parts up to a certain degree, depending on what they have to do in regards to things such as load bearing and so on. This model should be in my opinion vacuum formed or done in fiberglass.....it's a very big subject. The main body holds 2 stabilizers one top stabilizer....and a big cockpit I think thats asking a lot for a medium like resin. You have to remember this subject was a working tool a filming miniature, that doesn't always mean it can be made out of any medium.......and I think the size should dictate the chosen medium. Maybe if I knew why resin is used so much i would better understand......to be fair I don't use much resin. Anyway it's a cool thread to me because I want to see how your going to pull it off....I am rooting for you! ![]() Regards, Michael |

Re: Shuttle Tydirium
Ok back on track with this. Picked up the armature today. This and a few clamps and some epoxy should do the trick. I'll get this part together over the weekend and let you guy's know. Excuse the mess in the pix. I really need to clean the shop.

Re: Shuttle Tydirium
Hey John , yeah mate the acrylic came with the kit. Very nice too. Clean cut . I just had this milled to fit the horizontal joists so as to pull it all together. This thing ain't goin nowhere once the glue sets.

Re: Shuttle Tydirium
Ok so today I epoxied the plates in.(finally). I had these machined with the grooves to line everything up nicely.

Re: Shuttle Tydirium
Came together ok I think. I still have to install the wiring for the engines and the wing tip lights then I'll join the fuse together.

Re: Shuttle Tydirium
That looks awesome!
And very solid... But also very heavy. What´s the weight of those metal (aluminium?) plates?

Wow - looks great.
How does the mounting rod attach? In the last picture it looks too far back to hit the large hole in the aluminum plate. |

Re: Shuttle Tydirium
Thanks guys it is a heavy kit to begin with. The whole kit with armature and base will come in I'm guessing at aroung 5 kg. The rod/support is solid steel and is mounted forward as per the original. Will start on the wing detail next.

Re: Shuttle Tydirium
Almost. Just waitin in a few things. I tried some 12v neon tubes in the engines. But they didn't spread the light too well. Next up tried some blue LED's but even with the diffuser in place they look like blue **** holes in the snow. So I'm waitin on some EL wire to give that a go. Also waiting for a new cockpit from Steve. Then it's all downhill from there baby.

Re: Shuttle Tydirium
Not as yet mate but I'm onto it. Will have it up in the general section this week. Ever since Richard (REL) showed pix and mentioned it was close to studio scale , I've wanted to start it but I've only gotten so far as removing the plastic hinges and sanding some of the crap panels and chips off. It's a pretty big ship.

Re: Shuttle Tydirium
Have you considered cold cathode tubes for the engine lighting? They might be like the neon though. That's what I'm going to try. I noticed in a pic of the engine area opened up on the blu ray, see pic. They seemed to have used an upper and lower light tube for it.
