    Jun 5, 2012 - ROTJ AT-ST, Scratched head, Hasbro chassis #1

Im in the early stages of scratching a replica of the AT-ST go-motion studio model. Been a fav since I was a little boy, and to build one is one of my dreams.

I got my hands on a Hasbro AT-ST for 20 bucks, that I thought would be fun to mess around with. But when it arrived I was pretty amazed at finding the legs and chassies looks to be pretty darn close to studio scale. The head width is allright, but its to short, making it have proportions more like the ESB version.

So I started to plan for completing the SS head first, and use the Hasbro legs, while I build the armature, wich is something I think will take a while to sort out.

Little was Bob aware of the troubles laying before him...

Nice pick up for $20. I'll be watching this one like I watched Keith's mod of the Hasbro AT-ST.

The Hasbro is not bad at all. The smaller head size is probably to make it have better balance. The width is ok, but the height is way smaller.

Here is the paper head on the chassies. It sits to high, due to the can I used, but you get the idea.

Ok, so started on the legs and chassis. Gonna go through what you need to do to make it better. Its pretty straightforward work. Take it all apart, there are a few parts, so keep track on them. Fill the lowest leg part with putty. Cut the area above the joint (where the lower legs meet the middle.

Next make an inside plate to the top leg out of thin styrene and glue it in place. Cut out the plastic inside the small details below the front joint.

Cut the plastic where the toes goes in the feet.

I also started to cut at the front of the chassis. Ill post more about that later.

Funny note. One of the AT-STs thats on tour, has broken leg details. The Hasbro has these broken details sculpted, lol.

    Cheers Randy!

Once I got the right measurements, I built it incardboard, its rough, I didnt get the top pic in perfect scale, but the round shape looks pretty ok, so I think I can use it. Im starting in styrene soon. Cant decide if Im gonna vac-form or just do it piece by piece.

Im beating the crap out of those Hasbro feet now.

Ive stripped the feet from the simplified details. The shape is not to bad. I couldnt size down the part that goes to the leg joint as much as I wanted, as it would be tricky to get it durable. Its a little sanding left, then Ill start on adding new details. Time to get that old Darth Vader TIE and have a look at the details.

I am feeling rather silly for continuing posting, given how poor the feedback is. But when I started this project I planned to make step by step instructions if anyone felt like having a go, I know I learned tons just by reading other ppls thread, so Im sticking to the plan.

Ok, here is the detail from the bottom of the Vader TIE.

And here it is together with the mounted claw. I used an aluminum rod, to make the holding part longer. Styrene details, and some details from the original Hasbro foot.

The original studio model have really dirty feet. I still remember the surprice I felt when seeing the AT-ST when the exhibition was in Sweden some years back. It looks like the did it this way. Mix white glue with water, sand, fake grass from the model shop and mix it so its pretty thin, more like dirty water, than thick glue. Then paint it on with a brush. If mixed right, it will work like a paint and will dry pretty quickly.

On the studiomodel they painted it afterwards. This will seal the glue and stuff into place, and will be painted to look like dirt again later on. Here is a before and after pic of it next to one on my sons AT-ST.

Hi Nazgul. No need to feel silly about your posts in relation to the feedback. The number of views show that people are checking out your work. I too am guilty of not posting any comments from builds I enjoy following. Seriously though, what you're doing here looks great! Please keep up the good work.

Yes. Please don't stop posting. I love the work you do Nazgul. It is very inspiring and makes me want to do the same but I know my skills are not that good to do what you do. It sure makes me want to give it a go though.

    Thanks guys!

I started on the head. Its not much to say, I tried to get the wonkyness the studiomodel has. Its a lot like the stormtrooper helmet, they have many small stuff thats hard to recreate, like the mandibles and wonky lip line and those give them their great personality so I wanted to try to get them on this if I could.

Basic shape turned out ok, but the eyes where tricky and I had to redo one of them, Still not 100% happy with the eyes, but hopefully they will work with the hatches on.

Here is the faceplate on my sons ST.

That face plate makes a huge difference to the overall look of the AT-ST. I see what you mean about the eyes too. Will you be give the face plate the "scar" on the armour at all?

JP: I was considering making the Tempest Scout 1 with the scar, but I really dig the one with oil marks running down below the eyes. It also seems to have wonkier inner eyelids, giving it an almost organic look.

Im on the fence now in how to do the next step on the head. Thinking of vac-forming the sides. Since its a one off, Im not sure if its worth the it.

It would probably be quicker and easier to cut the different parts from styrene and gluing them.

Yeah, I did the sides the same night I posted. The first bend at the top went ok. Used a heat gun and bent the styrene over a piece of wood, with the right shape. I think bending it the other way will be ok, just gluing it to the top and bottom piece, should give it the right curve.

Might try to vac form the side armor, as it needs to have perfect edges at the top.

Got the basic head together. It was quite a puzzle to get everything to fit. Still some sanding to do, but the seems are ok.

No, didnt need to mate. Worked out just using a heat gun and a piece of wood with the right curve.

I vac formed the dishes earlyer today. Im making the side armor plates now.
