    Oct 7, 2012 - Red Dwarf X Miniatures #1

    Hi guys,

I thought that some of you might be interested in these shots. I've already posted one of them in another Red Dwarf thread, but they are more suited to the Studio Scale Forum. Now that RDX is out I can share.

This was built for the close-up fly-by shots seen in the opening credits and other establishing shots. It is an 8'x4' panel. I had a week to build it with the help of Steve Howarth.

Much of the panel work is from 4 huge Revell 1/200 North Cormorant kits that we had and are also a bunch of castings that Bill Pearson had made over the years dotted around the panel.

RDX was shot with HD Red Epic cameras, so we needed quite a high level of detail for the close up shots. The surviving Red Dwarf model wasn't up to it.

Most of the sections are removable so they can be swapped out for others to give the director more variety.

Big thanks to Guy Cowen for sending me a box of kit parts to help get the job done!!

    Cheers

    N

Brilliant and very happy they are using (mostly) miniatures! The first episode was great, far better than the last 3 attempts. Can't wait for next week.

Any chance of an even closer/larger look at the removable panel with the name plate on it? That to me is an idea replica piece in the making :-)

Cheers guys. Lot's of miniatures in this series. I've got some nice pics of the Blue Midget I restored and redetailed, that I'll post at some point.

Here is the 'Trojan' built by Steve Howarth for the first episode...

I'll see what I can do about a close-up of the logo section.

REALLY glad to hear that! Especially after the cgi banality that littered the last three series.

Appreciate the pics, Neil. Looking forward to more!

Have they returned to model work for financial or 'old school look' reasons?

    Loving it whatever the reason.

If you have never heard of RD, do yourself a favor and rent or buy the series. It is by far one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. Sci-fi too!

I am so glad to see some RD love on this forum, and these models are fantastic. I've watched every episode of Red Dwarf over the years and am waiting patiently, (NOT) for RDX to hit the states.

It makes me happy to see the old school model makers have started to have their works shown in the media. CGI is all good and fine, but there is just something beautiful in a model made by someone who excels at his craft.

Keep us informed, Neil and make sure they keep on using the real thing

Really nice work Neil, beautiful. Especially with only a week to build it in. Big fan of the old Red Dwarf but haven't seen any of the newer stuff.

Hi all, has anyone got any more reference pics of the S.S. Trojan? All I have are these low quality screen grabs.

I've always thought the small rouge one was beautiful. These pictures just go to prove it.

But why do you model makers always have to use such obscure kits? I ask you? A model of a North Sea oil platform? Really?! Why couldn't it be 1/72nd Spitfires? They're two a penny!

Keep an eye on Steve Howarth's site here. Hopefully he'll post shots of his Trojan build at some point.

Horses for courses. I was supplied with this same kit to detail a large bridge-span miniature many years ago, and it just lends itself to this sort of look.

    Bu**er-all usable detail in a 1/72nd Spitfire!

Awesome. Cheers man. I'm attempting to design the quintessential 'British' sci fi ship. Taking inspiration from Hyperdrive, Jerry Anderson, Doctor who and of course, Red Dwarf. I've emailed Steve, so hopefully he'll get back to me at some point. Keeping 'em X'd

The sign of a true scratch model builder. Always keep the interesting looking bits. They'll come in handy at some point.

Are the S.S. Trojan's thrusters binoculars? I love the shape of those things.

Amazing work, I'd love to have a crack at that big red side panel, it would look awesome on my wall.

Any chance of a few pointers on construction techniques , parts and paint?
