    Aug 20, 2012 - Re-tooled Kits #1

Several Tamiya kits, such as the 1/700 Shinano and Yamato, required for various studio scale builds have been re-tooled since being used on the particular minature people are looking to replicate.

Does anyone have any photos of the parts that have been re-tooled as opposed to the original and how they affect the build?

Couldn't tell you on those two kits Dean But the Airfix Saturn v was "Retooled". Not much difference overall but the second stage boosters used on the X-wing intakes was no where near as good as the originals. For scratch builds anyhoo.

On the topic of the airfix Saturn V, you will most certainly need the vintage shroud for the radar dish of the 32" Falcon.

Thanks guys. I had actually forgotten about this one when I first started this thread but I have this image which highlights the significant changes made Airfix made.

On the left is the original with the newer more accurate version on the right.

Well actually in the case of the Shinano and Yamato that's not a retooling but new toolings. Everything is different, even the breakdown of the parts...

Man, I thought I was going crazy! Thanks for clarifying, JP! So the Smithsonian is a direct copy of the original only softer.

The Smthsonian Saturn V is technically a minor retool. The engine nozzles have longer pegs and one of the two cans we know from the X Wing has extra tabs and very minor mold damage to some surface detail.

The first two box art versions of the Airfix have the original. All of the subsequent Airfix releases were the slight retool. And only recently they got around to making their kit more accurate.

Unfortunately for Studio Scalers, it makes our builds less accurate. Anyone ever buy a USAirfix boxed version? I have also read of the Airfix kit popping up in generic bags.
