Ray meets Mighty Joe...again!

I just got back from London and had the honor of presenting Ray Harryhausen with a perfect working a replica of the original Mighty Joe young armature. Ray has said many times: "Everybody has one of those but me!" Well, now he can't say that anymore. I had a wonderful time at his home and he couldn't have been more gracious. Thanks to his archivist, Tony Dalton, we were able to surprise Ray with this piece, and I think he really was thrilled..... I know I was! Thanks again, Ray, for a lifetime of inspiration. It's a moment I will never forget.

Awesome...

The first time I went to Archon (sf convention near St. Louis), the guests were Ray Harryhausen, Ray Bradbury, Forrest J. Ackerman, and Julius Schwarts.

My wife swears my feet never touched the ground the whole weekend, I was so high on Cloud 9!

Ray is doing great. He certainly doesn't look or act his age. I shook his hand a couple of times during the visit and I could feel that he still had the strength to crush me like a bug. I hope he enjoys the Joe armature for many, many years. What a wonderful, talented guy. I'm still on a high from the visit.

What an experience that would have been. Ray is a absolute legend. I wish I had been that fortunate to meet him.

Did you ask him what he thinks of visual effects today? I wonder if he is even slightly critical of digital technology which all but seems to have killed off the skills that he mastered when at his peak.

Amazing to think of today's effects films, with 300 Plus people working on the effects, Ray Harryhausen was a effects company of one, a true Legend. That is so cool that you got to present him with one.

This question has been asked of him many times in the past and his unwavering answer is, IMHO, the correct one: CGI is merely another tool.....without talent and vision it's worthless. Also, with more stop-motion being done today than ever before, I'd hardly say that it's been "killed off."
