Hello,
Just got the special 6 disc Battlestar Galactica on DVD. The one with the Cylon head as a case and have gotten the bug to try and build the shuttle that was used in the show. Can anyone supply any pics or info of the shuttle model that was used in the original Battlestar Galactica television show.

Thanks,

I know a member who checks out this board from time to time made an excellent studio scale reproduction a few years ago. I'll leave it to him whether he'd like to come forward with any info.

My understanding is that TOS Galactica shuttle is in the works for a 1/48th kit by SMT. Late 2004 or early 2005.

The pictures are all great. Still would like to get some of the underside though. Lot of detail under there that can't be seen too clearly. The release of the SMT kit sounds great! Still would love to scratchbuild my own. I believe the studio scale shuttle was 1/32 scale.

okay, I am unfamiliar with SMT...

Can you explain who they are to a neophyte?

Thanks!

SMT is a very good model company. They usually do not make things in studio scale...usually. However they do have a "V" fighter on their site that is a direct mold from an original For the galactica shuttle I'm not sure if its studio scale or not, but I did hear that Alfred Wong is making the master. There is also a rumor that many of the origianl kits used to detail the studio model are being used on the one he's making which implies that its pretty close to if not exactly studio scale. It will be a nice model either way - of that I don't have a doubt.

Groovy! I'm savin' up my sheckles to get that kit!

I really don't do spaceships much, but for some reason I've always been fond of the Galactica shuttle.

Maybe cuz it looks like a puffer fish?

That shuttle has the same "notched panelling" as the Falcon. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the original model makers worked on both.

I remember seeing a photo of some model makers working on Battlestar models, with the 5' Millennium Falcon in the background.

I recall reading an article that mentioned some odd facts about the Galactica shuttle. They built the model to represent a rather large spacecraft. If you compare the size of the windows to the rest of the craft, it looks like it could be 100 feet long or more.

But when they built the "full scale" set-piece for the live action (hangar bay) shots, they realized that 1) the landing gear would make the access door high above your head and 2) the ship would be too large to recognize... it would just look like a huge box on legs in the live shots.

So they ended up building it at about 1/4 scale (if I remember correctly) and eliminating the landing gear altogether so it would just belly-down on the floor of the studio. That way they could have those huge engine bells hanging in the background so people would know it was the shuttle. But if you compare scale to the model, its pretty screwy.

If you built a 1-1 scale replica of the shuttlecraft, you wouldn't just be able to fit ONE landram inside, but probably four or more. And that makes MUCH more sense to me. Its a shuttle, right? Its supposed to carry stuff! If you could only fit one car on a ferry boat, it wouldn't be a very efficient ferry would it?

Just some thoughts.

The Studio Model used to be hanging in the old Fry's Electronics store in Fremont, Ca along with a few other models.
Don't know what happened to them when the store moved.
Probably got tossed.

Oh, it didn't get tossed! It is in the hands of a private collector and has since been restored. Note the link earlier up in this thread.

Sometimes I find the stories behind the props/models to be more fascinating than the pieces themselves.

How did the model end up in the front of an electronics store? How odd.
