Apr 28, 2012 - New to this awesome forum... Hi guys! Couple of quick questions within. #1

    Hello guys!

I stumbled upon this forum when I was searching for "details" of the ATAT side guns. I was pleasantly surprised to find like-minded people/modelers!!!! I thought I was alone. Hahaha.

This is the first time I encountered a "studio-scale" genre. How do you guys know the exact dimensions? I have never seen or have encountered studio-scale kits so wouldn't know the scaling.

For the past 15 years I have amassed almost all the amt/ertl/mpc starwars kits, HALCYON Aliens kits, and some other movie kits. But the flood of 2009 where I live claimed all of it. I did get to salvage most of it, built and unbuilt. ALL the unbuilt parts are in a bin waiting to be sorted and built. The built kits are just waiting for a re-build. A tragedy... but a salvageable one. Just gives me an excuse to re-build and improve the builds.

Anyway, aside from kits, I now am scratch-building stuff. I'm making bigger versions of my kits. I just scale up what I have so far. So this STUDIO SCALE thing is quite intriguing.

Is there a "place" for creative license when it comes to "details" or is this a "has to be EXACT or your work is poop" kind of thing? hahaha

Although I do have tons of reference pics I usually find myself improvising and sometimes redesigning some detail areas. So they "look" similar at first glance but finer details are "mine".

So... #1 where do you guys find your dimensions?
#2 is this a "has to be EXACT or your work is poop" kind of thing?

    Thanks guys!!!

And yeah... anybody have detail shots of the side guns?

Welcome to this forum mate, hopefully you will find the info you need.

Dimensions eh?. Well, most of us work out the dimensions from the actual kit parts used to detail the models. Once you have ID some 'key' donor parts, only then do the dimensions become apparent & you can draw up a blueprint to work from.

While most here strive for total accuracy with every kit part exact & ID correctly, there are a few who build with their own detailing but still work with the actual SS size. Neither way are frowned upon, but they have to be SS size to be in this forum.

    Hope this helps?.

Gotcha. What about the "big" replicas... what are they called? Even bigger than SS.
Cause I'm stuck with my build... I think its a little bigger than the biggest SS. Hahaha. I'm committed to my build... not sure if its SS. Best guesstimate... same scale as the MPC Snowspeeder.

You mean your building a 1/1 based on an MPC snowspeeder? cant quite grasp what your saying. 1/1 is also called live action too.

Welcome to the forums. I think what he is saying is he is building an AT-AT to scale with the MPC Snowspeeder, as he was asking about the side gun deatils.

Sorry for the confusion... yeah, I'm building an ATAT that's to scale with the MPC Snowspeeder... at least I think they're close enough to be in scale with each other.
Guy, I have most of those except the "money" part... believe it or not I'm making do with the materials that I have... every piece of scrap is usable.

So SS is a cult thing eh? I can understand that. hehe

I have not mounted the legs to the body yet as I still have to build the "under-chassis". Offhand I think it'll be a bit taller than 4 feet. I'm concerned about the finer details though, as I mentioned in the "modeling" forum. I keep a close eye on reference pictures and am scratch building each and every piece... so you can imagine the amount of inaccuracies in my build... well, inaccurate in the "studio scale" sense. I AM doing away with all the allen head bolts... they're just too recognizable.

This won't give you a size reference though... and its a phone cam so the image sucks.

Mocked it up earlier... it's not over 4ft after all.

That might or might not qualify as a SS project. At that scale it will be much bigger than the stop motion AT-ATs many members (and MR) have replicated, but there was a much bigger model used in the film for the falling over shots. I'm not sure if that scale would match your project or not.

Anybody have an idea about THAT particular AT-AT's height? I know it's "around" 4 ft, (that's what I keep encountering)... but what is its height exactly? or Girth... any measurement will do.
