    Jan 19, 2012 - Jurassic Park T-Rex Bust Build #1

    1:5 Scale Tyrannosaurus Rex

I am in the process of building and painting a Jurassic Park Tyrannosaurus rex 1:5 scale bust and decided to detail my WIP here. This model was purchased by a RPF member and commissioned me to finish and paint it with the male colour scheme as seen in The Lost World. I hope this tutorial will also help anyone who happens to have a similar bust and needs some tips.

As you can see, I have started removing the jaw so it can be re-attached in an open position. Because of this, some of the neck will have to be re-sculpted. For this step, I used a combo of tools, such as a hacksaw, drill and dremel grinder. The model is foam-filled. This process took about 1 1/2 hours, to avoid damaging the lip edges. Once the resin had been cut all around, the inner foam at the rear of the mouth was seperated by using a flat end side of my hammer in the front of the mouth and levered open (like using a crowbar). I heard a satisfying crack of foam as the jaw came off nice and neat in one piece! Time to hollow out.

Did he get the bust from the original 1/5 sale maquet used in Jurasic Park? I saw that a long time ago at ILM on display with a bunch of other stuff.I think there are a few completed copies(not just one),or was it a garage kit sculpt/purchase? Just curious.

Are you going to mount this on the wall on a plaque?

It's a replica of the studio model. These are available on ebay all the time. I don't know about doing the plaque myself, and would likely be more expensive to ship to the client. We'd have to discuss that. I believe he just purchased the bust as painted, so I'm painting and building it for him. The male Rex has a general green colour scheme, with yellow stripes on the top of its head and neck. I'm not sure if the client wanted blood on the teeth, so will check on that.

Hollowing out the foam of the main part and preparing to cut out the eyes. Also had trimed the flash resin from the insert teeth edges.

That's a very tough build, I don't know why they filled it with that foam, it was a nightmare to remove.

I built one if you want to look, here's the thread.

I went with my own color pattern.

    Hi

I've seen your thread before. Good job on completing the bust! Love the 1:1 scale bust you have too. I'm assuming you had the 1:5 scale one enlarged by a company and milled from foam? Have you started work on that one yet? Would love to see the WiP on that project.

I've hollowed out the foam now from the top of the head. I just used the flat head end of my rock hammer and dug it out with that, so it was quite a speedy process. I will be doing a 3ft head bust painting tutorial soon too. This current bust here is 2ft long.

I will be creating a full body for these 2ft busts also, so that's a whopping 7.5ft in length! I haven't decided on the posture yet, but thought about the visitor centre scene at the end of the first film, where the rex roars after throwing the Raptor into the skeleton See attached pic). Or, I may do an ambush posture, such as the Gallimimus scene.

Cool! I've never seen this 1/5 bust before. Wow, P-B!!! A 7.5 footer sounds impressive! I'm keeping an eye on this thread. Dude, the final visitor center pose would kick *****!

Rel, man, what a paint job! Insanely awesome is your standard anyway, though, so it makes sense that it looks so cool! Have you ever thought about making a painting tutorial video on cd, especially figure and animal painting? I'd pay for something like that.

Modeling & Painting tutorials sounds like a good idea and I've been thinking about that for a while. I might get around to doing one some day. Yeah, I think the visitor centre pose would be my first choice.

Just thought...I'd probably have to sculpt the throat section to fill the hole at the rear of the head, as well as the mouth webbing too of course. These will be molded and cast in resin for strength.

    Sweet! VC pose!

Yeah, the only time I went to Wonderfest, I made a point of going to a really cool figure/animal paint session. Unfortunately for my goofy *****, I drank too much the night before and was nodding off during the seminar! Doh!

See, if you guys sell tutorials...I can have my beer, learn and paint at the same time and be fine!

I thought about doing a dead Raptor also at the rex's feet, as the Horizon kit is just the right scale for this. A base is a must, and I've always loved those bone/fossil sculptures in the Visitor centre.

Here's the tongue and eyes to be painted:

ok, no worries. Do you want any around the lip too (at the front)? Just found more great ref for the male paint scheme.

The dead raptor at its feet would go a long way in showing the t-rex's superiority imo.

ok, you remember the mouth is going to be open, right? Unless you decide to go for a closed one as in the pic. I will be cutting out the eyes next and cleaning up the excess resin around the lip edges.
