Guys
Throwing this one out there, in the vain hope some may surface. Looking for ref of the Tippet mini, not the full scale.
Also, anybody ever got into a stop motion build of this prop, if so, wanna bang heads?

Some pix with tippet here.
Creating ED-209 - The making of RoboCop
Cheers Simon, im betting its not a well documented subject matter, as not much seems to surface of the smaller prop.
Just wanted to get my head around the inner armature workings i guess.

I'm thinking maybe old cinefx or starlog from that year may be a good start.
Ahh, Simon, thems good'uns, thanks man. Smaller than i envisioned.
Anybody know if the Horizon kit is close to the size of the studio mini?
lee
I remember talking to Tom Gilliland about this when he was at Kit Kraft and this model first came out. He mentioned that parts of the stop motion puppet were molded and became the starting point of the Horizon model. He used to do a lot of Horizon's paint masters at the time so I had no reason to doubt him....the scale looks about right.
Nick, awesome, thankyou. Dan, that you? Yes, i kinda thought the horizon could have been used, id bet some shrinkage ensued, kinda pondered using that kit as a springboard for a build.

So, while RPF stalking you, Lee (just kidding, I was looking for the name of the resin you used on your Y, the Easyflo 60), I found this thread you started. Hadn't seen it. I am a huge ED fan! Here's my build from 2005. I have another unbuilt Horizon kit that I plan on using to build hollow shells for an armature. I've been waiting to see if I ever found ref on the armature. Even emailed the Tippett site hoping to get info about that and Robocain (the two baddest robots ever! IMO). Nothing ever came of course.
Autoprops, I could hug you right now for that info! LOL! I remember coming close to the kit measurements when I was calculating the size of the miniature in the photo with Tippett holding it. The only thing that bugs me is the lip around the black head shell. A metal microphone shell was supposedly hammered out to create a vac-buck for the movie model. The miniature doesn't have a lip, or at least it's not as prominent as on the Horizon kit. I wonder if the thicker lip on the kit was added to block the material used when molding the real model. Hmmm?
I even considered the Hottoys ED but didn't like that it didn't travel on the rails. While the HotToys ED is super awesome. I felt that if it was going to be articulated, that it should have included that motion. Of course, the price would have skyrocketed. That don't mean we can't recreate it!
So, Lee, let me know if you need measurements of the Horizon model. We can bash out the details and move towards a more screen accurate model. I have the ref Simon and Nick posted and a little bit more. Mainly hi-def screen shots. And of Cain, too, but that's another monster entirely!

Are you looking at machining a metal armature or just building a kit?

Machining or getting an armature machined is what I would like to do. I would love to just see a pic of the naked armature!

Also, I'm a huge fan of Autoprops info regarding the relationship between the Horizon kit and real miniature. However, I notice many differences. If the kit is a copy of the miniature, were the two movie models slightly different in minute details and if so, which one was the Horizon kit based off of? This is already fun! I hope those who know a great deal of the miniatures will chime in!

Hi there,
This finished Horizon based ED 209 seen here :
Non-TF: ED-209 articulated Horizon Model - TFW2005 - The 2005 Boards
is currently in my possession ... though it does look screen accurate the maker did take some
liberties and came up with his own solutions to make this a slightly 'moveable' character . . .
also he failed to mention that ED 209 has a thick underlip due to warping of the vinyl

JD1, thanks man! Wow, I've never seen those pics! I really need to take up machining!
Sym-Cha, that's a cool model!

Sorry it was sooo many years ago. I used to visit Kit Kraft almost every weekend and Tom had the Horizon parts laid out on the counter. I THINK he knew which parts were scratch built and which ones were molded from how he was describing the kit. If I remember correctly he said the main body shape along with parts of the legs were cast...but many of the details were resculpted. Now I wish I took notes! The talk did end up making me buy one however.![]()
Tippett Studio Tour: Starship Troopers, Jurassic Park, and Robocop - Tested
i realize the vid revolves around the full-scale one, but thought it may be enjoyed considering the topic matter? i hadn't seen tippett recently -- the thread under the video relays many of my same thoughts (wish phillip seymor hoffman would do a SNL skit of him)
Thanks guys.
As its Christmas I was clearing out the loft, and found my Horizon ED-209 amongst a whole load of '80's kits I intended to make before life got in the way of my passion.
I put it on eBay for an hour, and then slapped myself, and took it off again. I am going to make the sucker, and these reference photos mean there are no excuses!
Cheers
Neil
Found that making off clip:

Now this is one of my favorite Robots. May I ask how tall is the Horizon kit and is that still available today?
