ed 209 dimension question

I searched on here and didn't find much of an answer. I was wondering what the dimensions of the ED 209 stop motion model and full sized model were if anyone knows. From what i've seen in photos he's over 6' tall for the full sized but i can't really guess width other than many as wide as a guy with his arms stretched out. Any help is appreciated.

Re: ed 209 dimension question

Dude, I'm with you about wanting stop-motion ED dims. I am still waiting for a reply to my email sent back in 2003 to the Phil Tippett studios requesting drawings for the model. He should be replying any day now. Hey...I tried!!!

I've always wanted to build my own S. Motion ED but sadly never found much info about the construction.

Re: ed 209 dimension question

I found a bunch of photos of the crew standing next to the full sized one so with a little fudging i'll at least try and guess the size. If it isn't 100% accurate at least it'll be big lol.

Re: ed 209 dimension question

I've been to Tippet's house, (few years back) at the time the Fiberglass ED209 was in the living room, I'd say 6 feet MAX, it wasn't any taller than I was (tought it was a while ago) & I am 6'0".

Re: ed 209 dimension question

I always thought it was bigger than that. Then again i wasn't sure how tall the the guys in the pics were and he may have been up on a platform during assembly in a few.

Re: ed 209 dimension question

It may be possible that the one I saw was not a filming prop, but a promo item of some sort ? Phil is a collector also, and his house is packed with stuff.

Re: ed 209 dimension question

The ED stop-mo model wasn't too big either as I recall.I'd have to look back through the Cinefex issue.I think it was really only about 12" high.I thought about making some simple joints to go with the Horizon kit,but I don't know.Plus,I don't have access to a mill or lathe,so I can't really make anything like that right now.

Re: ed 209 dimension question

I was wondering about joints for the larger one too. I'd have to get them made special plus you don't want something big with loose joints flopping around. I think this is gonna be one of my longest projects.

Re: ed 209 dimension question

I could help make the body shapes for some hollow casts that could go over a simple SM armature.

iceman, anyway you could get info about how the body was made...kitbash, scratch?

Re: ed 209 dimension question

I've seen an article/blog on the construction of the full sized prop(try a google search) .It was constructed of wood and fiberglass castings.I think only the arms could be manipulated/positioned and the torso would swivel left to right. It might have has some radio control in it,but I don't remember?Basically, the full sized prop's joints were made similarly to the smaller, machined stop-mo armature but made of wood and not as complex or precisioned.

Re: ed 209 dimension question

Not too much on the construction of the stop-motion model of ED-209.Cinefex has the best photos, but no detailed information on the fabrication of the armature.Basically, you just have to figure out A) how to make the joints and B) the appropriate ones to install, and the "know how" to machine them on a mill&lathe. If memory serves, it was machined of aluminum(aircraft grade-pretty standard) and it was primarily hinge joint designs(there may be some ball&socket joints and possibly some more complicated,"exotic joints" made) and I'm not sure what else? The major components were vacuformed for the most part and a number of cast resin pieces and kit bashed parts applied.I think Tippet made 2 puppets, but I'm not sure and they were used in all three films. That's all I can remember really.

I pose a similar question years back when I finished my Horizon kit. I had photos and everything on wackychimp, but it appears all that was lost except the thread.

I haven't spoken to Phil in years, I only saw him occasionally in the ILM models shop (we worked on Howard the Duck together) I doubt he would even remember me. However, a good friend of mine worked for Phil for many years, I'll check with him first.

Re: ed 209 dimension question

This is so going to be a massively long project. I'd love to make him 1/2 scale so probably 3-4' tall. i have plenty of plywood to make the basic shapes out of. the details might take more time as i'd have to do them by hand as i don't have a milling machine.

Re: ed 209 dimension question

I was gonna try and be cheap lol. I'd have to find a good local source for balsa as the craft shop isn't big on carrying much other than doll house sizes.

Re: ed 209 dimension question

Notice that in some of the pics the full sized mockup seems bigger than in others? Were they able to adjust the height? Some he looks to be about 6' tall and other he looks a bit bigger.

Re: ed 209 dimension question

Looking at those photos, it definitely looks taller than 6 feet. The one at Phil's just didn't look that big, it was in his living room, and most of the houses in North-oakland/Berkeley only have 7 foot ceilings, so it wouldn't even fit.

Now I definitely need to talk with my friend- It's going to bug me if I don't find out !

Re: ed 209 dimension question

lol. I'd say he was 7' at least maybe bigger at the top of his dome. The one Phil has may have been used in other shots when a larger one wasn't needed.
